Omaha Marian’s Brittany Witt Commits to Creighton
Brittany Witt’s ability as a libero could have taken her just about any place she wanted to go. Ultimately, though, the junior-to-be at Omaha Marian decided to stay in her hometown.
Witt has given her verbal commitment to play at Creighton, giving Bluejays’ coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth one of the best libero recruits in the nation. Earlier this year Witt was named to the PrepVolleyball.com “Soph 79” list – which included just six liberos.
“Obviously Creighton is a great school academically and it’s a great opportunity as a volleyball player. The coaches there are amazing,” Witt said. “This was the best opportunity for me to improve as a volleyball player. It felt like the right place to go.”
Witt said she was considering other schools such as Maryland, Missouri, Long Beach State and Nebraska-Omaha. It wasn’t so much Creighton’s proximity as it was their academics and volleyball program that set it apart, she said.
“(Location) was one of the last deciding factors,” Witt, who plans to major in accounting, said. “My whole life, I thought that I wanted to go away to college and not stay in Nebraska. So, I was really focused on just finding the right school and volleyball program. With Creighton, it’s just an extra bonus to be able to play in front of family and friends.
“It’s definitely a relief to have made the decision. Now I can focus on what I need to do to get better and not worry about trying to impress other coaches.”
Witt also said her experience on a visit to Creighton also made a big impact on her. The team unity and how welcome she felt in the school’s surroundings made her very comfortable.
Witt has a reputation of being a fundamentally superlative defender and a history of being on successful teams. As a freshman she helped Omaha Marian to the Class A runner-up in 2012 and this past fall she logged 647 digs and 644 serve receptions in helping lead Marian to the Class A title. Her 36 digs in the final against Millard West were the most of any player in a championship match.
Witt’s commitment to Creighton also signifies that the state’s top college programs are wasting little time locking-up the top players from a talent-rich Class of 2016 in Nebraska. Last month, Lincoln North Star’s 6-foot-1 middle Sarah Allick committed to Nebraska.
