KEARNEY – Starting today through Thursday, some of the top volleyball teams from across the state will be on display at Kearney Catholic High School at the Nebraska Top 10 Volleyball Camp.
Competition starts today with the Class D-1/D-2 division. A total of 18 teams are competing in the division, 12 of which finished last season in the top 10 in their respective classes in the final Nebraska Prep Volleyball rankings.
Play continues tomorrow with the Class A/B/C-1 division and concludes on Thursday with the Class C-2 division. In each division, 18 teams play a total of eight matches within their pool and then are broken into the Gold and Silver divisions based on pool-play results.
In the Class D-1/D-2 division today, one of the more interesting contests will be between Giltner and Stuart, which is a rematch of last year’s Class D-2 State Championship, won by Giltner.
Other schools competing in the D-1/D-2 division that finished last season ranked include: Friend (#3, D-1), Howells-Dodge (#4, D-1), CWC (#5, D-1), Ansley-Litchfield (#7, D-1), Southwest (#8, D-1), Bertrand (#4, D-2), Mead (#6, D-2), Leyton (#7, D-2), Hampton (#9, D-2) and Wallace (#10, D-2).
The Class A/B/C-1 division features two teams from Class A that finished last year ranked in North Platte (#8) and Millard South (#10). The top two teams from a year ago in Class B – Norris and Grand Island Northwest – are also at the camp, as is Waverly (#5), Beatrice (#7) and Aurora (#8).
Kearney Catholic and Minden – the two teams that played for the Class C-1 State Championship last year – highlight a group of teams from that class competing. Wahoo (#5), Columbus Lakeview (#6) and Gothenburg (#7) are other top 10 teams from last year competing in the camp. Hastings St. Cecilia – the defending Class C-2 state champion – also is playing in this division.
The A/B/C-1 division also will feature a handful of players who have already made college commitments, including Omaha Concordia’s Megan Wickey (Ohio State), Norris’ Kylie Hohlen (Furman), Gothenburg’s Tiani Reeves (Nebraska), Kearney Catholic’s Morgan Stute (Nebraska-Kearney) and Norris’ Maddy Bruder (Northwest Missouri State).
The Class C-2 division promises to be ultra competitive as well with five teams from last year’s top 10 (Palmyra, Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family, Crofton, Lutheran High Northeast and Blue Hill) joining Class D-1 state champion St. Mary’s.
Below are links to the schedules for all three of the divisions. Nebraska Prep Volleyball will be in Kearney covering the action Tuesday and Wednesday with continuous updates on the NPV Booster Club blog page.
