WARM-UP MUSIC REVIEW: No warm-up CD for Omaha Concordia – instead the band played during pre-game warm-ups. Huge shoutout to the Concordia band – easily one of the best you’ll hear in a Class C-1 gym. A good band always beats a warm-up CD. Always.
OMAHA – With the match tied at a set apiece and the third set knotted at 25-25, everyone in the Omaha Concordia gym knew where the Mustangs were going. And it just didn’t matter.
Megan Wickey, a 6-foot-2 Ohio State recruit, pounded back-to-back kills for the 14th-ranked Mustangs as they won the third set 27-25 and eventually defeated Columbus Scotus 22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-13.
Concordia, 4-0, actually led 22-18 in the third set before Columbus Scotus went on a 5-0 run to take a 23-22 which sent a jolt of nervous energy through the Concordia crowd. The Mustangs got a kill from sophomore outside Averey Yaksich to tie it at 23-23 and then Wickey got a kill to bring it to set point at 24-23.
Scotus, which dropped to 2-2 with the loss, tied it back up at 24-24 on a kill by Maeghan Pieper. Wickey and Pieper again traded kills as the score got to 25-25 before Wickey closed out the set with two more kills.
On the night, Wickey finished with 30 kills and Pieper led Scotus with 15.
After the emotional high of winning the third set, Concordia never trailed in the fourth set.
