COLUMBUS – It’s common for teams to play like every match is important at this time of the year, but Columbus Scotus took it a step further Monday night in the Class C1-7 subdistrict tournament.
Scotus, 19-8 and ranked #6 in Class C-1, made quick work of David City 25-15, 25-18, 25-13 in the semifinals before dominating #8 Columbus Lakeview 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 in the final. Lakeview defeated North Bend 25-20, 25-11, 25-16 in the other semifinal.
“Every point was important to the girls tonight,” first-year Scotus coach Joe Held said. “And it showed on the scoreboard.”
With the win, Columbus Scotus advances to the Class C1-4 district championship Friday night with a guaranteed trip to state on the line. The Shamrocks will face the winner of tonight’s Class C1-8 subdistrict final between Pierce and Stanton at a site to be determined.
WATCH THE END OF THE MATCH
After both teams took care of their opponents in straight sets to start the knight, Scotus controlled the championship from the very beginning.
The Shamrocks never trailed in the first or second set after building leads of 7-1 and 5-1, respectively, in each set. Lakeview found some life in the third set and took a 5-2 lead on a kill by Mikayla Hoefelman.
A kill from the Shamrocks’ Kimberly Stutzman – who finished with a match-high 15 – and two ace serves from Maeghan Pieper tied the score at 5-5. The two teams went back-and-forth from there until a Scotus hitting error tied the third set at 13-13.
Three Lakeview errors, a Stutzman kill and two aces from Morgan Thorson kick started a 12-2 run by Scotus to end the match and send the Shamrocks on in postseason play while ending the year for the 25-9 Lady Vikings.
“There aren’t any words to describe (the win),” Stutzman said following the match. “We played as a team and played with a lot of enthusiasm and energy.
“We knew Lakeview would be tough, and we told ourselves not to get to cocky if we got up and not to get to low or upset if we got down. We wanted to play point by point.”
