KEARNEY – As summer begins to wind down, the final major competitive team camp for high school volleyball in Nebraska is about to get started in Kearney this week.

The Nebraska Top 10 Camp – hosted by Kearney Catholic – brings together several of the top teams from across the state to compete in three different divisions beginning Monday and running through Thursday.

A total of 47 teams will be competing during the week, starting with 13 teams in the Class C2 division on Monday and Tuesday. The Class A-B-C1 division (18 teams) will being play Tuesday afternoon and will run through Wednesday. The Class D division (16 teams) starts Wednesday afternoon and runs through the end of Thursday. All matches are played at Kearney Catholic High School.

Here is a quick preview of each of the divisions. Nebraska Prep Volleyball will be in Kearney from Tuesday through Thursday providing coverage of the competition. Nearly 20 different colleges are scheduled to be in attendance at the camp this week as well. You can see the full schedule for each division by clicking on the link.

Class C2 Division – SCHEDULE

Teams

Sandy Creek, Centura, Southern Valley, Hastings St. Cecilia, Nebraska Christian, Kearney Catholic Gold, Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family, O’Neill St. Mary’s, Kearney Catholic Green, Wakefield, Ponca, Crofton, Cambridge.

Storyline

O’Neill St. Mary’s is the two-time defending Class D-1 champion and will actually drop down to Class D-2 for the 2015 season. St. Mary’s also owns the state’s longest winning streak at 55 consecutive matches. Clearly St. Mary’s is looking to tackle tough competition in the summer by moving up to this division, and it will provide matches against four teams that finished ranked in the Class C-2 top 10 last year in Crofton (#2), Hastings St. Cecilia (#3), Centura (#8) and Nebraska Christian (#9).

Class A-B-C1 Division – SCHEDULE

Teams

Millard South, Norris, Elkhorn, Columbus Lakeview, Seward, Wahoo, Grand Island Northwest, Kearney Catholic, Stanton, North Platte, Omaha Concordia, Gretna, Ord, Minden, Gothenburg, Aurora, Kearney Catholic Gold, St. Paul.

Storyline

There are all kinds of storylines in this division. North Platte and Millard South are the only Class A teams competing. North Platte is a Class A title contender while Millard South is talented but very, very young. Norris is the two-time defending Class B champion, but graduation hit the Titans hard. Gretna, Elkhorn, Grand Island Northwest and Aurora are all likely to be pre-season ranked Class B teams and this camp will go a ways in determining what those rankings look like. The same can be said in Class C-1 with powers Columbus Lakeview, Kearney Catholic, Omaha Concordia and Ord all participating. There are going to be a dizzying amount of high-quality matches in this division.

Class D Division – SCHEDULE

Teams

Howells-Dodge, Ansley-Litchfield, Hampton, CWC, Emerson-Hubbard, Laurel-Concord, Mullen, Cedar Bluffs, Exeter-Milligan, Bertrand, Lawrence-Nelson, Friend, Diller-Odell, Leyton, Stuart, Meridian.

Storyline

While O’Neill St. Mary may have moved up to the Class C2 division, I would argue that the Class D group has more overall talent and top teams. Seven of the teams reached the state tournament last year. Kylie Belt, a 6-foot-1 middle from Emerson-Hubbard, will compete and is recovering from a major knee injury she suffered in the district finals last year, which kept her from playing at state in 2014.
