Recap From Tuesday, Nov. 27: Southwest, Southeast Reach HAC Final

Lincoln Southeast was able to pull an upset while Lincoln Southwest was able to avoid one during the Heartland Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday night in Lincoln.

Class A #5 Lincoln Southwest cruised through the first two rounds of the tournament with sweeps of Lincoln High and Lincoln East to reach Thursday night's championship match. The Silverhawks will face Lincoln Southeast in the final after the #7 Knights defeated #6 Lincoln North Star 22-25, 29-27, 25-14, 25-16 in the semifinals.

Southwest (21-9) got a combined 16 kills in the two matches from senior Wichita State recruit Allie Davis - 13 of which came in the semifinal against Lincoln East. Rachel Walker added 13 total kills while Northern Colorado recruit Taylor Els had 17 digs and Hailey Bax finished the evening with 30 assists.

Also Tuesday night, Class B #2 Omaha Skutt jumped on Class C-1 #4 Columbus Scotus early in each of the first two sets on its way to a 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 sweep of the Shamrocks.

Skutt took a 7-1 lead in the first set and a 9-3 lead in the second set to control each. In the third set, it was Scotus that got off to a quick start and 3-0 lead, but that quickly disappeared and the two teams went back-and-forth until kills by Allison Schomers and Brooke Heyne sandwiched around a Shamrock hitting error gave Skutt a 14-11 lead.

A pair of setter attacks by the Shamrocks' Morgan Thorson and kill from Hannah Thomazin kept Scotus in the third set at 17-14, but Skutt ended the match on an 8-2 run with Skyhawk freshman Lily Heyne having four kills in that stretch.

Class B's third-ranked team - Grand Island Northwest - withstood a major upset bid by Lincoln Pius X to win 25-15, 25-19, 18-25, 17-25, 15-8. The third set was tied at 8-8 before Northwest finished the match on a 7-0 run.
