With both of these clubs sending teams to the Girls Winter Volleyball Championships at McCormick Place in Chicago next weekend with a bid to Nationals at stake, a little tune up this weekend would be just a prelude of a full season of tough competition and USAV Qualifiers.
In pool play, Milwaukee Sting 18 Black was able to down WVA 18 Black in three sets. Despite dropping the first set, the second two belonged to Sting, but was extremely competitive throughout the match. Abby Hamilton, the Loyola Maryland commit, plays extremely high from the outside. On the other side you have Abby Koenen, the UW-Milwaukee recruit, who has a whole repertoire of shots to go to in order to score points. Paige Jaeger, a UNC Greensboro commit at libero for Sting was extremely consistent in serve receive and also taking away what were thought to be for sure kills from WVA.
WVA was playing without Green Bay recruit, Alexis Dorner who suffered an ankle injury earlier in the day, but was still powerful with the Kimberly duo of Emily Scott, a Louisville commit, and Brianna Weyenberg. Scott is virtually unstoppable running a fast tempo set and is always a force to be reckon with blocking at the net.
In bracket play, Sting 18 Gold would see WVA 18 Black in the semifinals. Sting 18 Gold was able to win in straight sets. The three pins of Brooke Anderson (Iowa State), Mia Grunze (Ohio State), and Mikaylah Van Lanen (Dayton) all provide a different style of play from the outside that is tough to stop. Sting 18 Gold has not just one, but two great setters in Claire Mosher (Marquette) and Miranda Wucherer (Northern Kentucky). Wucherer is able to play on the right side when not setting, one of the most versatile players to come out of Wisconsin this year.
Next weekend Sting 18 Gold and WVA 18 Black will be playing for an Open bid to Nationals, while Sting 18 Black will be playing for a USA bid to Nationals.
