With the first round completed in the 64-player “Most Feared Attacker in Nebraska” bracket, here is a look at all the results and the 2nd-round match-ups that will take place on Twitter starting at 6 p.m CST on Tuesday, Feb. 27. In total, nearly 16,000 votes were cast in the first round!
First, for clarification, there were two contests that ended in “50-50” ties on the Twitter votes. Twitter rounds the percentages up or down, which can sometimes create what looks like a tie. However, the winner is still highlighted in blue. In one example, the winner of the contest had 50.3% of the vote, which was rounded down to 50% while the other participant had 49.7% of the vote, which was rounded up to 50% So, if a Twitter vote shows each participant having the same percentage, the winner is still the individual highlighted in blue at the end of the voting period.
Malcolm’s Jaela Zimmerman, the top overall seed and the #1 seed in the Allison Weston bracket lived up to her hype as the Creighton recruit and Gatorade Player of the Year had the highest percentage of votes in her contest with 85% No other player in the competition got a higher percentage.
Sticking in the Allison Weston bracket, the only upset came as Northern Colorado recruit Bailee Sterling of Kearney – a #10 seed – defeated Minden sophomore Jensen Rowse – the #7 seed. South Dakota recruit Mattie Johnson of Sidney can a late push from her friends in Sidney to pull away late from Ralston’s Taylor Skiles.
In the Gina Mancuso bracket, top seed Emily Bressman proved just as dominant in Twitter polls as she is on the court as the Omaha Marian junior and Creighton recruit garnered 83% of the vote in her match-up. The Gina Mancuso bracket was where most of the upsets happened with Iowa recruit Emma Grunkemeyer of Millard North edging UMKC recruit Melanie Brecka of Lincoln Southeast 51-49 while Grand Island’s Alexa Blasé – an Omaha recruit – edged Hastings College recruit Cece Beahm of Hastings and Papillion-LaVista freshman Norah Sis edged Pittsburgh recruit Sabrina Starks of Platteview.
In the Jordan Larson bracket, #3 seed Fallon Stutheit – a future Husker from Johnson-Brock – had the strongest showing, getting 76% of the vote in her contest. Top-seeded Marriah Buss of Lincoln Lutheran held off a strong push from Sydney Fitzgibbons. The only upset in the bracket was #9 seed Kyla Swanson of Wahoo – an Illinois recruit – knocking off Wayne State recruit Taya Beller of Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family – the #9 seed.
Another future Husker – Skutt Catholic freshman Lindsay Krause – had the best showing in the Kyla Roehrig bracket, getting 81% of the vote in her contest. In another one of the incredibly tight matches, #13 seed Taylor Pribyl, a Jacksonville State recruit from Omaha Concordia, barely sneaked past #4 seed Jaden Ferguson. Top-seeded North Dakota recruit and top-seed in the in the bracket Taliyah Flores of Papillion-LaVista South fought off a tough battle with Grand Island Central Catholic’s Kamryn William to advance.
Speaking of the Flores-Williman battle – it was BY FAR the most popular contest, drawing 740 total votes. No other contest had more than 700, showing just how much support both those players had. Seward’s Camryn Opfer got a win over Stanton’s Jessie Brandl in the second-highest voted poll with 644 voters.
