Tanchin is a Minnesota Select veteran enjoying her latest year with the club team.
“I have been with MN Select for four years and it has been a great experience for me,” Syra said. “It was the best decision for me as a player. I love this club, and feel like the coaches have helped me get to the level I am at today. I get to play with other great athletes from all over the area at a very high level”
Select is in the middle of a busy schedule that includes a trip to the Wisconsin Dells this weekend. Improvement is the focus each and every weekend with Select and with the trainers Tanchin spends her sessions with.
“Along with club practices and training, I am working out with The Base Sports Performance to improve my strength, power and quickness.” Tanchin explained. “I can already feel that this has helped improve all aspects of my game. As far as skill, and as a six-rotation OH, I am always working on becoming a better passer. With more core strength, I hope to increase my vertical and which will help with my hitting and blocking.”
Tanchin has helped STMA inch closer and closer to their goal of the state tournament. As a freshman Syra made varsity and was named Freshmen of the Year from STMA but the season ended in the first round of sections.
As a sophomore Tanchin grew into an all conference performer and helped her team to the section semi-finals. Then, as a junior, the team took another step as the 2 time all league player led the Knights to a 26-5 record and they were a hard fought battle with Champlin Park away from making a trip to state.
“We had a great team this past season, almost making it to state, so that ultimately would be where we’d all like to be again,” Tanchin told Prep Dig. “We did lose some key players to graduation but we also have some key players remaining and some up coming girls to fill the open spots.”
As a top 20-25 level competitor in the junior class Tanchin is of course hearing from scholarship level programs.
“I have been contacted by schools from all division levels from all over the country, particularly in the Midwest area,” Tanchin said. “Most interest is coming from D1 and D2 schools. I am very excited to say that I do have offers and I have taken several college visits over the last year.”
As far as Syra’s volleyball influence goes, that’s easy, All-American Golden Gopher Katherine Harms. Harms is also from STMA High School where she starred before becoming a unanimous All Big Ten Performer.
“Katherine Harms is my idol,” Tanchin stated. “Ever since I knew she came from my high school, she has inspired me to believe that I can play college just like her.
“In fact, I chose jersey number 8 in club because that was her jersey number. I had the chance to meet her briefly and to get my picture taken with her – that was such a great thrill for me – once when I was a ball girl at the U and then again as an STMA player.”
