Top teams across the country congregated to the Orange County Convention Center and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to battle for a chance of capturing the national title.
This week was the 16’s division. This age group is made up of five divisions: Open, Premier, Club, Aspire, and Classic (listed highest to lowest). Clubs that made the trip from Iowa were Adrenaline, Iowa Heart, Iowa Power Volleyball Alliance, Iowa Rockets, and Midwest Volleyball Power.
Adrenaline had two 16’s teams compete at AAU Nationals this year. The club is based out of Hiawatha, just north of Cedar Rapids. Adrenaline 16 Black and Adrenaline 16 Rox both competed in the 16 Classic division this week. Adrenaline 16 Rox finished 27th out of 136 teams. With a 10-2 tournament record, the team won the Ruby division by defeating Club One 16 White from Illinois in two sets, capping off their season with a victory.
Adrenaline 16 Black finished 70th in the same division. They went 5-5 during the four-day tournament and lost first round of the Pearl division to Illinois Juniors 161 in two sets.
Also competing in the 16 Classic division was Iowa Heart 16 Black from the Ames area. The team finished 16th out of 136 teams with a 10-3 record. Iowa Heart fell in the semifinals of the consolation championships to Adversity Wisconsin 161 in a three-set thriller.
From Iowa City, the Iowa Rockets 161 team competed in the 16 Club division of the national championships. The team features 2020 Concordia University (NE) commit, Cheyaenne Bunch. The 161’s went undefeated in pool play, winning their challenge match and earning themselves a spot in the gold tournament and chance at the national title. Iowa Rockets lost first round of the gold tournament to 1st Alliance 16 Red from Illinois in two sets, finishing the tournament with a 10-1 record for 9th place.
Iowa Power Volleyball Alliance, or better known as IPVA, sent the 16 Black team down to Orlando to compete in the 16 Premier division. Based out of Des Moines, IPVA 16 Black went 4-6 on the tournament. They competed in the Diamond division the final day and lost first round to Tribe 16 Elite from Florida, earning themselves a 38th place finish out of 106 teams.
Midwest Volleyball Power out of Sioux City sent one team to compete for a national title: MVP 16 BLUE. Featuring 2020 University of Sioux Falls commit, Ally Beresford, the team competed in the 16 Club division and was undefeated in pool play entering their challenge match. After a two-set loss to the #1 seed of the tournament: Arkansas Juniors 16, 16 BLUE bounced back and captured the Consolation Championship the following day. The team ended the tournament with a 14-1 record, earning them 19th place overall.
