Continue ReadingIt’s no secret, Izzy Ashburn is a one of the state’s star setters. At 5’11, senior Izzy has already committed to playing for the Wisconsin Badgers next year, but for now, she has her eyes set on a run at the state championship. She has set the stage for what looks to be a great season.
Champlin Park took on Hopkins this past weekend and handled them fairly easy winning 3-0 at the Breakdown Sideout Classic. Ashburn ran her team like a well-oiled machine with 30 set assists. She spread the offense out so well making it nearly impossible for the 7th ranked Hopkins to keep up defensively. Her humble yet confident attitude was displayed during the match and after in several post-game interviews. Everyone seems to be watching this special setter and her team, and they did not disappoint.
It feels like deja-vu to see another dominant setter at Champlin lead the team with such grace. Sydney Hilley, former teammate of Izzy’s at Champlin park and a sophomore at Wisconsin, has helped pave a path for both Minnesota girls. Next year they will once again combine their setting powers.
Coach John Yunker has really helped these players fine-tune their skills while raising their volleyball IQ. While there was talk of him leaving Champlin to coach at NDSU, we are estactic to see he has chosen to stay here in Minnesota. With a setter like Izzy and a team that compliments her skills perfectly, we believe this is the year for Yunker and his squad to win the state title.
