West has the power of their two middle blockers in Senior, Anna Nerad and Sophomore, Alexis Boling who had plenty of “WOW” factor kills, but it was the solid defense and setting of a Sophomore trio and consistent play on the outside that ended up being the “X Factor” in putting West over the edge throughout the bracket play.

Anna Holland, a Sophomore libero was so consistent throughout the night with her serve receive and left back defense. It wasn’t just the digs and on point passes, but there were plenty of times where West would get blocked and Holland always seemed to be there with coverage. Tip coverage is something teams will work on all year and still don’t have it mastered where Holland was on point every time.
Another Sophomore, Abby Fregien stands all but 5’6, but her high IQ play on the pin kept the defense off guard all night, as well as playing middle back defense herself. Fregein was a starting outside for Midwest Penguins 15 Black which Boling was also on this past club season. With shots to the corner, swings off high hands, and smart rolls and tips put up a plenty of points for West.
The setting duo of Sophomore Mckenna Scharnek and Darragh Dixon were a solid combo to keep the defense off guard. Both can set the middle extremely well, and overall are just solid all around players. Scharnek was dangerous from the service line where Dixon puts on a lethal swing in the front row and then transitions to setter when she goes to the back row.
Germantown was playing their fourth match of the night when it came to playing West in the finals. The road to the finals went through three state tournament qualifiers from 2017 with wins against Greendale, Waunakee, and Waterloo. The Warriors have athletes at every position and with this recent finish, have solidified themselves as a dangerous threat to be reckon with this season.
Tori Zagorski leads the way with a heavy left handed swing with Sophomore and soon to breakout Tatum Catalano and Junior, Nicole Censky on the pin. Hannah Brown, the 6’0 Senior middle blocker provided some highlights at the net and even some swings out of the backrow. She just hangs in the air and is extremely aggressive that can score points in bunches with her swing and block. Behind them all is one of the top 2020 liberos in Amber Bischel who plays with a grittiness that all great teams need.
