Waunakee is rolling with an 18-0 start. The Warriors are ranked No. 2 in the latest PrepDig.com Division 1 Power Rankings. With a Badger North Conference match against winless Portage (0-13) coming Sept. 13, it appears the Warriors will stay undefeated at least for another week.
Of course, it takes a strong team with several talented athletes to stay on top. Here are five players leaving their mark for Waunakee through the season’s first three weeks.
Kiana Schmitt, senior, outside hitter
Schmitt, a dominating 6-3 middle hitter, is hitting over .400 with 95 kills and 31 total blocks. Schmitt, the top-ranked player in PrepDig’s Class of 2019, is heading to Division I Creighton. It’s likely she will continue to post impressive numbers as the season moves along. Waunakee has plenty of solid players to complement Schmitt, but there’s no question the Warriors’ offense runs through the senior.
Milla Malik, junior, outside hitter
With Schmitt set to graduate next spring, the 5-10 Malik could carry the torch as the Warriors’ best hitter next season. But Malik is already turning heads in 2018. Offensively, she has 100 kills and, defensively, she’s registered 97 digs. On the service line, she leads the Warriors in service aces.
Kaleigh Roepke, senior, outside hitter
Roepke (86 digs) is as a defensive mainstay along Waunakee’s front line. Offensively, Roepke has 68 kills and 13 service aces.
Lexi Langendorf, senior, outside hitter
The 5-11 Langendorf is a force along the front line. She has 26 total blocks and 35 kills through the early portion of the season. On defense, Langendorf has 13 digs.
Bridget Daniels, senior, middle hitter
When the Warriors give Schmitt a break there isn’t much of a drop off with Daniels in the middle. Daniels, also a senior, has 28 total blocks (21 solo) with 30 kills. Daniels is one of the team’s leading hitters with a .259 hitting percentage.
Honorable Mention: Jocelyn Meinholz, junior, outside hitter
The Warriors are stacked with outside hitters, but it’s hard to put together a list of Waunakee’s top contributors without mentioning Meinholz. The junior has 13 total blocks, 20 digs and 29 kills through the first couple weeks of the season.
