Not all underclassmen are ready and mature enough to step up big for their varsity squads. But let’s take a look at 6 of Wisconsin’s most efficient hitters from the 2021 recruiting class that are still available. If they aren’t on a college’s radar, they should be!

From The Class Of 2021

[player_tooltip player_id="80817" first="Mckenna" last="Armstrong"] – 5’11 – Middle Blocker – Random Lake (15-11)

Armstrong recorded a career high 24 kills in Random Lake’s 3-2 win over Cedar Grove-Belgium this past week, so it is no wonder she leads the Rams with 263 kills. She averages almost 4 kills a set and is hitting an impressive .340. A fun fact is that she has a great connection with her setter because it’s her older sister, Leah Armstrong.

[player_tooltip player_id="80711" first="Katie" last="Winkler"] – 6’0 – Right Side – East Troy (16-7)

Winkler has a heavy left-handed swing and is really great at using the block in front of her. She is hitting a .325 at this halfway mark to the season. Winkler has already recorded a career high 20 kills twice so far this season. She is receiving a lot more opportunities to swing this season and is definitely capitalizing.

[player_tooltip player_id="80714" first="Mariah" last="Grunze"] – 5’11 – Outside Hitter – Waterford (15-13)

Grunze was working as the number 2 attacker behind her big sister Mia, who is currently starting for The Ohio State. This year it’s Mariah’s time to take over, and has she ever! Grunze has a hard line shot and smart tips, but most impressive is the power she has. She currently has 309 kills so far this season and could easily get almost 500 if she keeps up this pace.

[player_tooltip player_id="56470" first="Lauren" last="Borchardt"] – Pin Hitter – Manitowoc Lincoln (24-9)

Borchardt is in her second season on varsity and has really increased her kill production and efficiency in the front row. She recently recorded a career high 16 kills in their 2-3 loss to Bay Port. Borchardt works as the number 2 attacker behind junior [player_tooltip player_id="10368" first="Katie" last="DiRaimondo"] and has 157 kills so far this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="80748" first="Randi" last="Wellhoefer"] – 6’2 – Middle Blocker – Oshkosh West (19-15)

Wellhoefer is having a solid season début. She recorded a career high 11 kills in the Wildcat’s 2-0 win over Kaukauna. Wellhoefer leads West with 152 kills and 72 blocks on a very young team.

[player_tooltip player_id="33767" first="Alyssa" last="Koska"] – 5’8 – Outside Hitter – Bay Port (19-12)

Koska is in her second season on varsity with a group that is mainly compiled of juniors. Koska isn’t leading the team in kills, but she is a big contributor with 171 kills, as well as hitting a solid .254. Koska does lead the Pirates with 50 aces and recorded a career high 17 kills in their 3-2 win over Manitowoc Lincoln.
