Peyton Suess OH | Kasson-Mantorville | 2019 and Maddie Converse S | Kasson-Mantorville | 2022
In a matchup with conference title implications on the line it was 2A #1 Stewartville versus 2A #2 Kasson-Mantorville as the most anticipated match of the night. Both teams entered with unblemished conference records and looking to claim the outright Hiawatha Valley crown. The Tigers struggled to find consistency in their ball control and the KoMets took full advantage. Suess, a Wake Forest commit, led the match with 23 kills and added two solo blocks as the K-M dominated to a 3-1 win. Converse, just a freshman, distributed 44 assists to go along with eight digs. With the win, Kasson-Mantorville reaffirmed themselves as a clear favorite for a deep postseason run towards the 2A state title. Set scores were 25-14, 25-9, 21-25, 25-15.
Olivia Tjernagel MH | Mayer Lutheran | 2020
Tjernagel’s upside has been a huge factor in Mayer Lutheran’s success this season. Coming off of back-to-back state titles, the Crusaders have relied a lot on Tjernagel for leadership and production. In their Tuesday night showdown against conference foe Southwest Christian, Tjernagel hammered 17 kills and totaled five blocks as the Crusaders prevailed with a 3-2 win to lockup a share of the Minnesota River title. Set scores were 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-13. This win is a confidence boost heading into postseason action. Tjernagel is a 2017 conference honorable mention selection and a recent Northern Iowa commit. A big test awaits Mayer Lutheran this weekend as they are set to compete at the Chaska tournament, which includes state powers Champlin Park, Eagan, Stewartville, Stillwater, and Belle Plaine.
Savannah Sears OH | Cloquet | 2019
Sears led the Lumberjacks to a 3-1 over the Hawks from Hermantown with 15 kills and 14 digs. Set scores were 25-15, 27-25, 17-25, 25-23. Sears is a 2017 Lake Superior all-conference honorable mention selection. The win snapped Hermantown’s six-game win streak and improves Cloquet’s record to 14-12 overall.
Abby Schaefer OH | Paynesville | 2020
In a 3-1 win, Paynesville overcame an Osakis comeback attempt with a dominating set four to close out the match. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-10. Schaefer had a big match in terminating 21 kills and collecting 23 digs. The Bulldogs improve to 18-4 on the season.
Piper Asche MH | MACCRAY | 2019 and Sydney Thein S | MACCRAY | 2022
MACCRAY easily defeated Cedar Mountain 25-10, 25-9, 25-8 to improve to 16-13 on the season. Asche provided 14 kills on the way to the 1,000th of her career. Thein, a freshman, was very productive in distributing the ball recording 37 assists while adding seven digs and five kills for the Wolverines.
