Continue ReadingThe Class of 2019’s time in the spotlight is almost over. They have given us a fun class to keep an eye on in our first full year in operation. I am amazed over and over again when watching teams at a tournament and almost always finding a few new names. Anyone can have a bad day just like anyone can have a good day, and we see both, but we don’t get to see the players every day. Once a player catches my eye or I see a new name in an article, I put them on my radar as a player for which to keep an eye out. Here are some new names from the 2020 class who we found early in 2019! We look forward to learning even more about them!
Alli RouthieauxAlli Routhieaux – 5’5 – Libero – Luxemburg-Casco – One Wisconsin Flyers 17 Black
1W was new on the club scene this year with a number of satellite locations. Routhieaux is the libero for the 17s and will be looking to compete for the libero position at Luxemburg-Casco after the graduation of Amanda Miceli. She is solid in serve-receive, scrappy on defense, and should keep running LC in system in 2019.
Autumn Bremness – 5’9 – Setter/Pin Hitter – Cadott – Cadott Stingers 17-1
Bremness is a 5’9 lefty who has the tools to be a really deadly right side hitter, but she plays wherever her team needs her. She can also work as a setter and can effectively distribute and score. Bremness runs a 6-2 for the Stingers and can also be offensive when there is an opening. She has promising potential to play at the college level. Bremness is a team player who helps her team in multiple ways to lead them to a win.
Chloe Decker – Setter – Antigo – One Wisconsin Antigo 17-1
Dekker is a very athletic setter for Antigo. Her ability to move quickly on defense and in transition makes her a solid pick-up at the D3 college level. Dekker can also make adjustments mid-play to catch the opposing team off guard.
Emma Jaje – Libero – Antigo – One Wisconsin Antigo 17-1
Jaje is a super solid libero for Antigo. She has a competitive fire for the game similar to some of the top recruits in the state. She also has a similar skill set, but the big difference is location. Without a State Championship or National-bound club team, her exposure to college coaches has been limited. Jaje does have a whole lot of potential to excel at the next level.
Emma ZubkeEmma Zubke – 5’5 – Outside Hitter – Newman – Wisconsin Ice 17 Black
Zubke is an undersized outside hitter who has been a part of a strong Newman program. Standing at 5’5, she has to elevate, and when she times it right, she can hammer the ball in the split. Zubke’s bread and butter is working around the block, and she is tough to stop when she is on.
Eve Akey – Outside Hitter/Defensive Specialist – Merrill – Medford Storm 17s
Akey is another undersized outside hitter, but is definitely the go-to for Medford Storm 17s. The tools that she has make her hard to read and defend. Akey is a strong passer which puts her as a solid prospect as a collegiate defensive specialist who can also swing. As an outside hitter, she can hit a great deep line shot, as well as tooling the block. Akey is a solid serve-receiver and will push Merrill to return to the State Tournament in 2019.
Jayda Friedenfels – Outside Hitter – Abbotsford – Central Wisconsin 18 Black
The go-to, Melanie Kunze, is graduating, but Friedenfels will be returning for the Falcons and will be a major point scorer. She can play on either pin and can be seen featured on the left pin for Central. Friedenfels is a strong six-rotation outside with a high contact point.
Rian Engelhardt – 5’4 – Outside Hitter – Ladysmith – Legacy Elite 18s
Engelhardt has an aggressive approach and will be a key player for Ladysmith as they aim to rise in The Heart O’North Conference ranks. She may be undersized, but she has mastered the deep cross corner shot. Engelhardt is athletic and aggressive, and if she can develop some more shots and solidify her serve-receive, she could be a real weapon in her senior season.
Saffron Mears – Pin Hitter/Middle Blocker – Oconto Falls – One Wisconsin Bay 17 Black
Mears usually plays as a middle for her high school team, and her background as a middle is a huge advantage while she is blocking on the right side. As a lefty, she makes blockers a little uneasy and puts defenders on edge. Mears has power as well as shots, including a hard cut shot that consistently takes teams out of system.
Taylor Pagel
Taylor Pagel – 6’0 – Middle Blocker/Pin Hitter – Wausau East – Wisconsin Ice 18 National
Pagel can play anywhere in the front row and be really effective. She is strong, really physical, and athletic enough to adjust both defensively and offensively. Pagel is also very consistent and dependable. She has grown a lot having played up for Ice 18 National. Pagel’s ceiling is very high with a good foundation and fundamentals.
