Adam VanOrt has continued to grow the already strong program since he took over as the head volleyball coach of the girl’s program. And now that boys volleyball in Minnesota is starting to flourish, it makes sense that he would lead this team too. After all, VanOort himself was a professional beach player for 5+ years. He knows how to teach volleyball and has experienced it as a male sport too.
This weekend, May 18 and 19th, will be the first ever boys high school volleyball state tournament. Eight teams will be competing at Shakopee High School. The boys sport has doubled in the number of teams after only two years. MNSHL has denied proposals to sanction it as a recognized sport for the second time this past April. However, that is not slowing down supporters like Walt Weaver and Hugh McCutcheon This year the league had eight conferences with approx. 50 schools. VanOort hopes to guide Kasson through this ground-breaking event.
The Komets varsity roster has 15 young athletes. They go into the tournament with a near perfect record 9-1. The boys proved they have what it takes to not only win their conference but also compete and defeat some of the best metro area teams. Some of the more experienced players on the team include VanOort’s son: Nic VanOort, Asher Rutgers, Aaron Winkle, and Brody Hegge.
They enter the tournament as the #3 seed. Other teams competing this weekend include:
#1 Andover
#2 St Paul Harding
#4 Prior Lake
#5 Roseville
SW Minneapolis
Proctor-Hermantown
It is sure to be an exciting event and one can anticipate lots of fans in attendance for Kasson Mantorville; we seen how much this town loves volleyball.
