The Class of 2020 was loaded with some future stars competing in the 17s as well as the 18s Division. Here are a few players who stood out among the rest.
Ella Collins – Milwaukee Sting 17 Black – Outside Hitter
Committed To Eastern Illinois
This commit is fresh off the press. Collins committed to Eastern Illinois this past week and had a solid showing in Des Moines for Sting 17 Black who was competing with the 18s. Collins is an outside with a big arm, but also has a really strong IQ for where to hit the open shot and how she is going to get it there with a roll, tip, or pure power. Collins attends Lakeside Lutheran who won a state title two years ago and will be gearing up for another trip to Green Bay to compete in the Wisconsin state tournament.
Anna Marvelli – Central Iowa Select 17M – Outside Hitter
Marvelli preps at Indianola High School and really is a swiss army knife of options where she can set or play on either pin. This past weekend I was able to watch her play on the pin where she can contact the ball high and really get a quick snap.
Gianna Feld – Milwaukee Sting 17 Black – Libero
Feld was one to watch heading into the weekend and she definitely delivered as the libero who can pass nails on serve receive and just make everything look routine giving the chance for Izzy Schauer to run a balanced offense for hitters like Collins and Maddie Weyker to terminate.
Calea Jones – Central Iowa Select 17M – Right Side/Outside Hitter
Jones is a really solid all around and dynamic for CIS. This past fall she was on a state title team for Ankeny Centennial where she was mostly on the right side. Jones is the type of player who is going to be incredibly efficient, making the smart/high IQ play, while finding the spot on the court to score points while also putting up a solid block.
Makenna Traver – MVP 17 Blue – Defensive Specialist
Traver comes from Sioux Center High School which is always producing top notch athletes and was the Class 3A state runner up in 2017. Traver is a really solid DS who is dependable in serve receive and was key in MVP’s run to the 17 and under title.
Abigail Neutz – Crossfire 17-1 – Pin Hitter
Neutz plays with quite a spark for the Crossfire team who went 3-2 over the course of the weekend. I was able to see a big block on the right side (with a big celebration) and some really solid swings from both pins whether in system or out of serve receive.
Madison Beumer – Crossfire 17-1 – Setter
Beumer is quite the motor behind this crossfire offense as a setter. Plays with a lot of intensity and emotion and puts the ball in place for her hitters to terminate.
Brielle Kallberg – MN North 17-1 – Middle Hitter
Kallberg may be 5’10 as a middle, but is incredibly athletic. A whip for an arm where she can get on top the ball she can really generate a lot of speed from pin to pin and also is extremely aggressive while attacking.
