I was able to catch some action last week and it has me pretty excited for the fall! My goal was to see some players I knew would be stepping up as well as finding some new ones! Mission accomplished!
Alani Carter – 2021 – 5’8 – Outside Hitter – Marshfield
Carter can explode to the ball and hits hard off the block. Marshfield has a lot of athletes looking to make a push in their conference. Carter will be depended upon to score points and terminate down the line and by tooling the block.
Brenna Lehrke – 2022 – 5’5 – Setter/Right Side – D.C. Everest
Lehrke may be undersized but she is strong and athletic. On the right side she is capable of hitting a mix of shots that score points. Lehrke also has a nice float serve that creates issues for most passers.
Elise Johnson
Elise Johnson – 2020 – 5’4 – Setter/Right Side Hitter – Newman
One of the more interesting league matches was between Marawood South rivals, Auburndale and Newman. Newman is loaded with state tournament experienced players and Auburndale was extremely competitive with them. Johnson has smart shots from the right side with the ability to hit over and around the block. She also has smooth setting hands and nice placement to give her attackers opportunities to terminate.
Georgi Schmutzer
Georgi Schmutzer – 2021 – Setter – Auburndale
Schmutzer is smooth on the court with nice footwork, soft hands, and a smooth release on the ball. Her sets are well placed, and she is an offensive threat with well-timed and located 2nd ball attacks. Auburndale will have some solid upperclassmen stepping up to take on bigger roles after graduating some key 2019s.
Lauren Shields – 2020 – 5’6 – Outside Hitter – Newman
Shields was showing her athleticism and will be a key go to for the Cardinals who should be another strong contender this season. The combination of Shields and Linnea Svennes (2020 – 6’1 – Middle Blocker) will be a force in Central Wisconsin. Shields can score points from the outside and from the backrow with an aggressive swing through the block. Her offensive game has really developed in the past year, but her strength has always been her ball control. Shields serves up a strong float and can work the corners of the court with expertise. She is strong in serve receive, scrappy on defense, and places smart tips.
Maddy Dokken
Maddy Dokken – 2020 – 5’10 – Outside Hitter – SPASH – Committed To UW-Parkside
SPASH will be full of fresh faces this season but Dokken will be one of the seasoned veterans this year after having a breakout Junior season as a middle blocker. Now on the outside, Dokken is a terminator with an explosive swing and a great arsenal of shots. She is also strong in serve receive and scrappy on defense as a solid 6-rotation outside hitter. Look for Dokken to be a leader for the Panthers as they fight for another Wisconsin Valley conference title.
Natalie Aue – 2020 – Middle Blocker – Auburndale
Aue is new on our radar but if she consistently plays the way she did at league she will keep climbing up in the Class of 2020. She may be one of the top middles in Central Wisconsin in the 2020 class. Aue moves well from pin to pin to put up a big block. Offensively, she runs a strong slide and has the ability to terminate with a solid contact and strong swing. Auburndale struggled in conference in 2018 but they should surprise some teams in 2019.
Olivia Stroik
Olivia Stroik – 2020 – 5’7 – Libero – SPASH
Stroik is an aggressive defender on the court. With her athleticism and volleyball IQ Stroik is a versatile player that could play libero or step in as a smaller pin hitter. She is a competitor and you can be sure she will step into a leadership role this fall.
