Continue ReadingThey came in as the #1 seed and there was a chance that the Badger National Select team could land some big wins at the USAV High Performance Championships in Fort Lauderdale. Even after an injury they were able to set themselves up for a chance in the gold bracket. One loss to Lone Star Select (25-21, 26-24, 22-25, 27-29, 13-15) took them from the hunt for gold to the hunt for bronze. It isn’t always easy to rebound after a loss but whenever teams are successful there are athletes who step up in a big way to reignite the fire. Here are a few players that were making big plays to capture the bronze.
Bella Van LannenBella Van Lannen – 2022 – Right Side Hitter – Appleton North
Van Lannen has been clutch in big moments with her block. She has a high contact point and is able to hit hard cross court. Whether its Van Lannen or Ammeraal blocking on the right side, they are providing a challenge for the opposing team’s outside hitter.
Berkley Mischler – 2022 – Middle Blocker – Appleton North
Mischler is from the Class of 2022 and will be a sophomore at Appleton North who should be locked and loaded this Fall. She is athletic and shows it when she can block, tip short or deep corners, and swing hard in the split to score points. Mischler also presents a challenge for the opposing team when she serves a nice sideline or seam float.
Claire Ammeraal – 2022 – Setter/Right Side – Madison LaFollette
Ammeraal is so athletic in her style of play. She can make a high contact and big lefty swing, puts up a block, and celebrates with a big smile. Select had a really solid showing in Fort Lauderdale and Ammeraal was a driving force behind that success. She is more than just a front row piece while she gets a ton of touches on defense. Ammeraal has been a part of winning teams with Capital 15 Adidas who won Badger Region Champs and took 2nd in the Premier Division at the JVA World Challenge.
Josie JohnsonJosie Johnson – 2022 – Setter – Waterford
Johnson was doing it all as a setter and defender. She is strong, athletic, and has a high volleyball IQ. Johnson positions herself well on defense, makes smart moves, and transitions into offense quickly. She does a great job of giving her attackers a hittable ball and favorable matchups.
Karissa Fortune – 2024 – Pin Hitter – Appleton North
Fortune is so smooth, controlled, and solid in serve receive. She finds the corners whether she is hitting from the front row or the back row. Fortune serves tough short seams and covers the deep corners on defense.
Kindyl Kilar – 2023 – Pin Hitter – Whitewater
Kilar is a spark on the court whether she on defense or swinging from the pin. She is so athletic and a natural at pursuing the corner shot, hard swing in the split, or the roll over the block and keeping Select in system. Kilar has a really solid serve with her placement, contact, and control. She also adjusts quickly and you don’t often score the same way twice on her.
