For some it might be their last national tournament, others still might be hoping for that last minute offer, and all are coming together to compete one last time for the 2019 club season. Who will be the top players and teams to compete from Iowa the USAV National Championships in Indianapolis.
17 Open
Six Pack 17s
Only 36 teams get to play in the Open Division, the top teams in the country with Six Pack being one of them. The club out of Cedar Falls qualified at the Windy City Qualifier in Chicago and also had a top four finish at the Northern Lights Qualifier in Minneapolis as well as winning the Iowa Regional. This team is full of plenty of offensive weapons, but Alayna Yates dominates offensively and defensively out of the middle. The soon to be Cedar Falls Senior and Dayton commit is 6’5, mobile, and strong. Teams must respect her which opens up options for Jaz Westmoreland and Jada Wills (Drake) on the pin as well as Sara Klunder and Lauren Schrock (Iowa) on the right side. Six Pack is the number 18 overall seed and the third seed in their pool with COAST out of So Cal and Arizona Storm ranked above them.
IPVA competing in Omaha.17 National
Eastern Iowa Xtreme 17 Teal
Central Iowa Select is a team that is full of athleticism and is extremely dynamic with what their players can do. Olivia Curry (Omaha), leads the way setting in the backrow and hitting on the right side in the front row. She is joined by high school teammate at Valley, Jacey Spann in the middle. Kate Nelson is a point scoring pin on the outside and Anna Marvelli is the swiss army knife type of player every team needs.
EIX was one match away from qualifying in Open at MEQ, and will be a favorite in the National Division. Aliyah Carter (Kansas State) and Kacia Brown (Mississippi State) will receive a large amount of the swings, but the rest of the squad is committed to top programs with some who will get a chance to show their skills to a national pool of coaches. Emily Strauss is a middle/right side who is a threat offensively and defensively and is currently uncommitted. EIX also has two Iowa commits in Bailey Ortega and Sydney Dennis along with Rylee Fay (Missouri State) and Delaney Rice (St. Louis).
Brooke Mulholland of Iowa Select.17 USA
IPVA 17 Black
Iowa Rockets 17R
Iowa Select 17 Mizuno
The USA Division is one of the largest divisions at the tournament with 64 teams divided among eight pools. IPVA comes in with the 25th seed, Iowa Rockets in at 34, and Iowa Select 40. The middle of the pack, a chance to definitely move up in the ranks right away.
IPVA will come in with quite a presence in the middle with Kara Peter (Drake) and setter Allena Shimon (St. Cloud State). One player to keep an eye on would be Malea Daugherty on the pin who is extremely terminal. Iowa Rockets 17R has been coming on strong the last two months of the season with a strong finish at the Northern Lights Qualifier and the Asics Junior Championship at Navy Pier in Chicago. Erica Brohm (Purdue Northwest) and Emily Kono (Upper Iowa) are two big time point scorers in the middle and outside with their counterparts Helaina Hillyard and Abby Brunssen who would be a solid pick up at the next level. For Iowa Select 17 Mizuno, the show is ran by Brooke Mulholland who will be a Senior at Clinton High School. The setter can do a little bit of everything. A solid defender, can attack on two, and also put up a block. One of her favorite targets is Emma Powell who is out on the pin and will be a Senior at North Scott High School.
