The top teams in the Madison area have been battling it out all summer and with one last time before tryouts start in just over a week, six teams will be going for gold Sunday night.
Watertown comes in as the number one seed overall. They are coming off a monster of a 2018 campaign winning multiple tournaments, including the West Bend Sprawl, one of the toughest tournaments in the state. They return two college commits in Izzy Schauer (Belmont) and Sam Gray (Huntington), but they also return a rising Junior prospect in Alayna Westenberg who had a breakout Sophomore season in 2018.
Lake Mills will come in as the two seed and will be led by Senior attacker Grace Schopf and one of the top setters in the Sophomore class in Sydney Lewellin. Lewellin is an extremely dynamic setter who can get her hands to the ball and also be physical at the net attacking or putting up a solid block.
Waunakee will have two teams in the final six along with Beaver Dam in the gold. Milla Malik will be the outside hitter for Waunakee who can score points from anywhere on the court providing a quick arm swing from the front and backrow, she also has a nasty serve which can score points as well. Setter and Augustana (SD) commit Sam Miller to run the show.
Verona and Sun Prairie will have a close eye on each other all season. Verona will have setter/middle combo in Jordan Armstrong (Penn) and Madelyn Kelley while Amelia Hust will hold down the backrow as libero. Hust just recently committed to WIAC power UW-Oshkosh.
Sun Prairie will be a big time threat to take the title as the six seed, especially if they have a full roster which includes plenty of athletes from their 2018 state tournament team. The Cardinals are athletic, solid all rotations, and are now experienced. They will have to replace All-State libero Morgan Jensen who will be playing volleyball at UW-Whitewater.
Other Notables
Milton, Mount Horeb, Edgewood, DeForest, Wisconsin Heights, and Middleton will be in the Silver bracket. Mount Horeb will be quite the force with Elise Goetzinger who will be heading to Kentucky after she graduated. Edgewood is definitely a team on the rise with a really athletic, young, and talented roster. Ella Foti will be leading the way setting, but she can do it all, along with setter Caroline Craig. Natalie Ring is one of the top outside hitters in the Class of 2022 and will be able to score points out of the backrow as well.
