Past:
Carly Townsend
Germantown has found their way to the State Tournament on 4 occasions; 1990, 1992, 2005, and 2014. The latest run at State ended in the semi-finals to eventual champion DSHA, led by Coach Ted Gollakner and 2014 Gatorade Player of the Year Carly Townsend. Carly had herself quite the senior season also being named Max Preps 1st team All-American, 1st Team All-State, 1st Team all conference, and Conference player of the year. Prior to a Gollakner led Warhawks program, Diane Harrod led the program. The longtime coach won a State title with Milwaukee Madison in 1977 and finished 2nd in 1978.
The Warhawks saw 12 North Shore Conference Championships before they made their move to the Greater Metro Conference. 2019 Graduate Hannah Brown (Bellarmine University) was the first in the program to receive
2019 Seniors with Coach Wagner
GMC all conference honors. Hannah was a 4 year varsity starting middle blocker that ran opposite of Megan Marks (McKendree University) who happen to lead the state in blocks her senior year. Another notable Warhawk is current UW-Milwaukee junior defensive specialist Kailynn Mongan. She was a sophomore on the 2014 State team along with all state honoree as a senior. While she was a DS/Libero by trade she led the Warhawks her senior year as a setter.
Present:
The Warhawks will be looking to compete for the top spot in the conference. They have the talent, but have seen some struggles since joining the Greater Metro Conference. This season could be the first time they finish Top 4 in conference and get back to the success they had in the North Shore Conference. Losing seniors is a part of the high school game, but Hannah Brown’s energy, voice, and leadership will be the hardest part of her game to replace. Tori Zagorski (South Dakota School of Mines and Technology) and Tabitha Wechlo (UW-Stevens Point) solidified the right side in 2018 and will be missed as well.
Senior Libero Amber Bischel
This year Coach Wagner will rely on 2 seniors in particular. Libero Amber Bischel (Ole Miss) will run the back row as the libero for her 4th year and Nikki Censki. Nikki can hit out of all three spots giving Coach Wagner plenty of flexibility with her deep line up. Tatum Catalano, Lauren Sitter, and Sophia Brown form their junior offensive trio that will give opposing defenses trouble all season. With the a surplus of talented swings, look for a 6-2 with Maddie Connor and Emily Galaszewski to start the year. Maiana Stark finished a club season with Emily, that connection could be utilized to give her right side reps. Incoming freshman Lilly Wagner Lilly Wagner 6'0" | S Oconomowoc | 2024 State #42 Nation WI , will make an immediate impact. Where she will play is the only question as she can play on both pins, or see work as a setter. I have high expectation for the Warhawks in 2019.
Future:
The future is bright for the Warhawks. 2019 will give them a great opportunity against favorite Brookfield Central. However, the Lancers have a potential of 9 seniors graduating this year compared to Germantown’s 3 (**Speculation on roster make up beforefinal rosters were announced based off 2018 rosters). 2020 gives Germantown another opportunity to take conference. Aerene Lim will put in the work behind Bischel and be ready run the defense as a junior. Sophomore Madelyn Weyda is an undersized outside with great back row potential. Lilly Wagner Lilly Wagner 6'0" | S Oconomowoc | 2024 State #42 Nation WI will be the next jack of all trades for the Warhawks. She brings a volleyball IQ above her freshman label into her 1st high school season. There is a lot of unknown with this program, but that unknown isn’t necessarily bad. This deep roster will have constant competition throughout the year allowing everyone on the roster to fight for a starting spot. Germantown should be near the top of the conference standings the next four years. They are part of the “Sectional of Death” but Amy Wagner has the volleyball knowledge and experience to give the Warhawks their best shot at a run at state since 2014.
