Continue ReadingSoutheast Iowa has something special cooking this season. With no surprise, Tipton has found itself at the top of the 3A rankings, but are followed closely by West Liberty and Davenport Assumption in the top five. If we want to expand the region a bit, the top six stretch from the Cedar Valley down to the Quad Cities:
- Tipton
- Mount Vernon
- West Liberty
- Union
- Davenport Assumption
- Dike-New Hartford
There are some big names coming out of these programs, but who are some of the new athletes stepping up to take these teams to the next level?
Kamryn Chapman – Tipton
Sommer Daniel has been the well-known name in the area, earning Class 3A Player of the Year in 2018, but the Utah recruit has a supporting cast of Seniors who are really stepping up big this year. Chapman is already over 100 kills for the season and is hitting .355 for her efficiency. Tipton avenged a loss to Linn-Mar to come back in the tournament to defeat Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Assumption in the title match.
Jorie Randall – Mount Vernon
With the big time attackers of Lauren Schrock (Iowa), Camryn Ellyson, and Natalie Welch, the Mustangs need a dependable first contact to get into system. Insert Jorie Randall, and all around athlete who can do a little bit of everything. So far this season, Randall has 138 digs which is just over four per set.
Monica Morales – West Liberty
Morales is in a similar situation as Randall where the Comets have big time swings coming from outside hitters Macy Daufeldt and Martha Pace on the pin. The Freshman libero has had quite a start to her high school career with over five digs per set and ten ace serves.
Jasmyn Bush – Union
Union is back! A state contender year in and year out, the Knights are always one of the top teams to compete with out of the ever so loaded Cedar Valley. Belle Weber has been on the radar since she stepped on the varisty court, but another big attacker is Jasmyn Bush. The Senior is averaging nearly four kills per set for a team that has wins over Janesville, West Delaware, and Hudson. Union will have a matchup with Dike-New Hartford on October 8.
Ava Schubert – Assumption
Assumption has built some depth after a state tournament run in 2018. Two solid pins in Emma Schubert and Kylie Welch, but on the right side is left handed Freshman Ava Schubert. Long, athletic, and a high contact point, Schubert is currently leading the Knights in kills. This past weekend Assumption had a tight match which resulted in a 2-1 win over Pleasant Valley and a narrow loss to Tipton at the Linn-Mar tournament.
Lexie Fager – Dike-New Hartford
The name says it all. Tradition for decades and this year is no different. A rigorous schedule against large schools to start the season and DNH is primed for local competition to make a state tournament run. Fager and Wichita State recruit, Morgan Weber lead the defense, while Weber is the top attacker. Fager has over 100 digs on the season.
