Continue ReadingThe Northern Sun Interscholastic Conference (NSIC) is one of the top Division 2 conferences in the country with multiples ranked in the Top 25, but even multiple teams ranked in the top ten making it the toughest region to get out of for a run at the Elite Eight. With teams in Minnesota, The Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa there are plenty of top athletes who are staying close to home and playing for one of these squads. Here are a few to keep an eye on this year as we watch the progression from the club to high school and soon to be the start of their college career.
Upper Iowa
Nicole Pozorski – Mukwonago (WI)
Slice and dice. I know that may sound graphic, but the way Pozorski is able to see the other side of the net and find the open spot is her sixth sense. Pozorski can run the middle as well as a variety of tempos to her attackers, but she just commands the court, something that is tough to teach to setters. Upper Iowa has been on the up and up, cracking into the top 25 rankings.
Madelyn Rettler – West Bend West (WI)
Rettler has a big arm and she is efficient from either pin and can be used in a variety of ways. Mukwonago and West Bend West compete in many of the same tournaments and are facing top competition week and week out of their high school schedule. With nearly four kills per set and as an outside hitting in the .300s, she will be a solid player at the next level.
Zoe Semelroth – Tripoli (IA)
Makayla SnowSemelroth has played big time club ball for Six Pack out of Cedar Falls where they qualified for the USAV 17 Open Championships last year. Currently in her Senior year of high school, Semelroth is carrying her high school team racking up nearly four kills per set as well as hitting just under .400.
Northern State
Avery Kroll – Waterloo West (IA)
Big time arm, and an athlete who can really carry a lot of swings and score points for her team. Kroll is hitting nearly .400 and averaging four kills per set playing from the pin. A solid six rotation outside will be a great addition to Northern State, who has built quite the program in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Makayla Snow – BOLD (MN)
Snow is the type of athlete who can do it all from being part of a state championship golf team to leading her squad as a setter. As someone who can perform well in clutch situations, Snow has the hands, IQ, and physicality to compete at a high level in the NSIC. Most recently, Snow was named to the Class A ShowcaseAll-Tournament Team. For her club ball, she had played for Kandi Elite out of Willmar, MN which has been sending athletes to NSIC schools all over.
Winona State
Sidney Paulson – West Bend West (WI)
Sydney PaulsonPaulson brings a really fast arm on the right side with a quick lefty snap. Playing high level club for Milwaukee Sting, she has the IQ and the ability to play against really top competition. This past weekend, she led her West Bend West squad to the Gold Bracket of the 28 Team Charger Rally where she was also named All-Tournament Team.
Rylee Vaughn – Lake Country Lutheran (WI)
Vaughn and Paulson were able to play on the same club team last season and will be playing together the next four years at Winona State. In my opinion, Vaughn was the MVP of the Division 3 state title game where she was owning it from left back. She was a mismatch problem going up against some of the top outside hitters in the state and putting a ball with pace in system. She is a major gamechanger and is playing for one of the top teams again this Fall.
Lydia Lange – Caledonia (MN)
Lange has been on the radar for a while and this is a major homerun for Winona State. Long, athletic, and the ability to play anywhere in the front row. She is going to be a force to be reckoned with in her career with the Warriors. It also helps she will be playing in her backyard which is bound to bring in a crew of fans!
UM-Duluth
Maddi Kealy – River Falls
Kealy spent the first month of her season in a boot healing from a stress fracture, but this past weekend she led River Falls to a second place finish at the Charger Challenge at the Milwaukee Sting Center where she was back to be one of the top setters in Wisconsin. So efficient with her feet and an IQ where setting is second nature to her, Kealy knows how to run the show.
North Branch senior Cianna Selbitschka goes up for a kill against Southwest Christian.Cianna Selbitschka – North Branch
What can you say about Selbitschka, other than she is one of the most dominant players in the entire state of Minnesota. She just has another gear when things get tough, she isn’t afraid to take the big swing in tight situations. Selbitschka and Kealy play together at Kokoro and their high school teams will play each other in River Falls on October 8.
Grace Daak – Hutchinson
Major upside to Daak. Physical and athletic presence at the net as a middle, she is going to fun to watch transition to the college game where she could even be used on the right side with her heavy swing and strong block.
