Everest Volleyball Invite Championship on Saturday, September 7th. The main gym had a strong draft going through that beach players immediately identified as something to help them get a nice float to their serve.
The Hatchets had two impressive 3-set wins, which included an upset of Merrill and a battle won over SPASH. While Merrill has been a D2 powerhouse, they were newly moved to D1 and SPASH has been a Wisconsin Valley Conference D1 powerhouse. Tomahawk had their hands full with Merrill in the semifinals, even after the Hatchets surprised the Blue Jays by taking the first set 25-21. Merrill dug in their heels and took set 2, 25-18. The Hatchets didn’t waste any time taking a lead and won the 3rd set, 15-10.
In the championship, SPASH played solid volleyball in the opening set for a 25-19 victory. From there, the Hatchets exploded and took the next two sets, 25-19, 16-14. When this Tomahawk squad is loose and in a groove, they are a real force to reckon with. The Hatchets were being aggressive, having fun and being physical at the net. Tomahawk was powered by senior Maddy Hanse (2020 – 5’8 – Outside Hitter) and sophomore Katie Pierce Katie Pierce 6'2" | MB Tomahawk | 2022 State WI (2022 – 6’2 – Outside Hitter) while mixing freshman Megan Scholz (2023 – 6’1 – Middle Blocker), and senior Morgan Ernst Morgan Ernst 5'1" Tomahawk | 2020 State WI (2020 – 5’3 – Libero) leading the defense. Pierce and Scholz show why Tomahawk will be a handful for years to come.
Spash is resting the injured thumb of setter, Miranda Rusin (2020), who typically runs the 5-1 offense. Maddy Dokken Maddy Dokken 5'10" | OH SPASH | 2020 State WI (2020 – 5’10 – Outside Hitter – Committed to UW-Parkside) was swinging well, but Tomahawk was able to make scrappy defensive plays and respond with a variety of attacks. In the championship’s deciding set, the score lead went back and forth, and it was a real crowd-thriller, keeping everyone on the edge of their bleacher-worn seats.
