Continue ReadingWeekend one is done and a few teams were able to make some big statements along the way. With tournaments starting across the state, some highly ranked teams were able to see each other early which will only be a prelude to some big matches along the way. Who were the big winners in Iowa to start the season?
Mount Vernon
The Mustangs started out the week as the number one ranked team in Class 3A. With the likes of Lauren Schrock (Iowa) and Natalie Welch propelling the front line attack there is plenty of power for the opposing side of the net to contend with. Schrock had 15 kills in two sets in their win against a ranked Class 4A Clear Creek Amana. The next week will provide another test with West Delaware and Beckman on the schedule.
Cedar Falls
The Ankeny Centennial Early Bird had nine ranked teams competing, but Cedar Falls ran away from the competition. Ankeny nearly took a set from the Tigers, same with Valley, but the likes of Kacia Brown and Alayna Yates were simply too much. Yates had 8 kills on 12 attempts in their championship win over Valley, outstanding numbers, but just another day for Yates.
CHAMPIONS! 5-0 on the day, and a perfect sweep of the day 10-0 (in sets) WIN over Underwood in the ship 21-8, 21-15 #ONE #UnfinishedBusiness #OurTimeisNOW #BurntheBoat @ALHSathletics @Coach_Bakes @CoachSchaa @IGHSAU @therealdon13 @d2mart pic.twitter.com/aK9Fsv8xOP

Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln
The Lynx went 5-0, winning the Harlan Tournament this past weekend. They defeated a ranked Glenwood team in the semifinals and a strong Class 2A squad in Underwood. Elaina Bohnet and Sam Christiansen have started right where they left off in 2018, racking up plenty of kill combinations, but the Lynx will continue to be a balanced attack with Kayla Schleifman, Jillian Shanks, and Julia Wagoner.
Underwood
Underwood was defeated by Abe Lincoln at Harlan, but that doesn’t take away from the quality wins they are able to tally along the way. Defeating Indianola, giving Sidney their only loss, along with traditional Southwest power programs in Harlan, Tri-Center, and Treynor. Macy Vanfossen and Zoe Rus will be leading the way for the Eagles this season!
Incredibly proud of this team! We went 5-0 to win the Grinnell Tournament! Such a great championship game against a very talented Dallas Center Grimes team! #cantstoptherise pic.twitter.com/Es6BAWAo6N

West Liberty
The Comets have jumped out to a 5-0 record and took home the Grinnell Tournament title with big wins over Clear Creek-Amana and Dallas Center-Grimes. Martha Pace and Macy Daufeldt (Drake) are the two pins who are the household names in Southeast Iowa volleyball, but keep tabs on setter Morgan Peterson as well as their Freshman libero in Monica Morales. She plays with a spark and no fear, she will be a big part of the Comet success this upcoming season.
Spirit Lake wins the Humboldt Tournament going 6-0! Our very own Emma Loveall also hit the 1000 kills mark! Congrats to her! pic.twitter.com/hq03cOTw8l

Major statement made by the Indians this weekend, going undefeated and taking home the title of the Humboldt tournament with huge wins against Carroll Kuemper, Humboldt, Fort Dodge, and Grand View Christian. UW-Milwaukee recruit, Emma Loveal was able to surpass the 1,000 kill mark for her career. Keep an eye on setter, Emma Jenness and attacker Jordyn Hamm. This is going to be a tough team to beat.
North Scott
The Lancers have started their season red hot with a 9-0 record, only dropping one set. Tonight will be quite the test between Quad Cities rival, Pleasant Valley. Both teams are very familiar with each other playing with and against each other for the likes of Iowa Select, Platform Elite, and Iowa Rockets.

Waverly-Shell Rock
Taking home the title at Bondurant-Farrar, the Go-Hawks have asserted themselves as a big time power in Class 4A. Some of their big wins there include Red Oak, Des Moines Roosevelt, and Holy Trinity. Keep tabs on Sophomore Avery Beckett, who had 9 kills in their final match against North Polk hitting .471.
Liberty
Welcome to Class 5A. Iowa City Liberty beat Xavier, ranked #2 in Class 4A in a highly contested five set match last week and then went to Charles City and swept the competition to be sitting at 5-0. They will have a big match with a rival that is all too familiar with Iowa City West tonight!
Who Else Had a Big Weekend?
Union took home the title at Independence which included a 2-1 win over West Delaware.
Van Buren is off to a 5-0 start after wins at WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union
Waterloo Columbus has started 5-0 which includes a win over a ranked Grundy Center squad.
Albia and Knoxville have both started 7-0.
Beckman will be one of the top teams in Class 2A and is off to an 8-0 state.
