Tradition, discipline, and strength are a few of the traits the coaches and athletes have embedded into their reputation. The notoriety of being a Caledonia Warrior is known to in Southeastern Minnesota, into Wisconsin- Lacrosse area and beyond.
The Warriors football team has earned national attention for their longest win streak in the country. They have won 64 consecutive football games. They will play to go to in the 1AA championship game next Friday. Their senior quarterback, Noah King, had five touchdown passes. King will play basketball at the University of South Dakota State. The program has been the home for NFL players Isaac Fruechte and Karl Klug, along with many great collegiate players.
Likewise, the coaches behind the volleyball program have been developing a strong tradition and talented players. This year there is a trio of seniors who have what it takes to advance to the state tournament. The senior bunch is led by Lydia Lange. She is a 6’2” middle who the biggest play maker for the team. In their last game against Wabasha Kellog, she topped every stat:16 kills, 3 service aces, and 21 digs. She has definitely lived up to the family name- older sister Emma Lange was a big Division 1 recruit and ended up playing volleyball at Concordia Univ.-St Paul. Now, Lydia has chosen to keep her talent close to home too with her commitment to Winona State Univ.
But before she goes, she and her classmates will try one last time at state run. On her left is outside hitter Alexis Simpson. At only 5’6”, Simpson is considerably much smaller, but when the whistle blows, you will forget the numbers. She is an forceful threat on offense with her aggressive four-step approach. They utilize her all over the court (similar to Lange.) In the WK match she also added 16 kills. Her energy and athletic ability make her one of the most entertaining players to watch.
Last, but not least is setter, Haley Jennings, she has the responsibility of calling the plays for the talented group of hitters. Her smooth hands, and strong legs help her spread the ball well. The way she plays defense and then breaks to the net set her apart from others in her area. Look for her to be the calm, confident player in Thursday’s match.
Mabel-Canton is the team these seniors will challenge on Thursday. Look for both teams to be strategic with their game plan. While MC’s bench may be deeper, Caledonia’s three seniors lead a stronger offense. Expect long rallies, lead changes, and a match that will likely go to 4 or 5 sets.
These seniors have an edge and the momentum to beat Mabel. With Lange contacting the ball higher than most of the MC blockers, Simpson attacking from various spots along the net, and with consistent setting from Jennings it may be their year to advance to the next round.
