There are some athletes that will be sure to provide the power, the smooth set, and the dig that gets their team up off the bench. With 16 teams from across the team from multiple classes, there are plenty of new names that will be ones to watch at the Westside Tournament held at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
Rising Athletes Athletes To Watch
Morgan Peterson – West Liberty
Peterson is a Senior setter that has been putting her in attackers in a place to terminate. Martha Pace and Macy Daufeldt (Drake) have been the go-to athletes all year long, but Peterson has been the main distributor for the Comets who have found themselves in the top five. This will be a great weekend for them to get some experience with athletes from bigger schools heading into the postseason.
Avery VanHook – Marion
VanHook is another top athlete on the rise in 2023. A setter for Marion along with Sophomore Elise Mehaffy has come into the varsity mix and is running the show when she is on the court. Not only has VanHook been dependable setting, but has also collected over 150 digs on the season. Marion could really make a statement this weekend. They are in a pool with Dowling, Hempstead, and CR Wash.
Monica Morales – West Liberty
Every solid offense starts with a good first contact. After seeing Morales at the Wisconsin Badger Team Camp, it was evident this Freshman was going to making an immediate impact for West Liberty. Scrappy, quick, and a big range Morales has found herself in the conversation as one of the top liberos in the Class of 2023. West Liberty is having a great season but will be returning a strong core of athletes for next year as well.
Jorie Randall – Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon will be looking to build some momentum heading into the postseason with their powerful attackers and Senior setter, Summer Brand. At libero is Junior Jorie Randall who provides a solid all around skill set with how she moves in the blackrow, platform control, and also putting up a good second ball for her hitters. Mount Vernon will be in a pool with Grundy Center, Linn-Mar, and Iowa City West.
Corinne Meier – Dubuque Hempstead
Meier is one of those athletes who shouldn’t be under the radar. Averaging nearly four kills per set and after seeing what Meier could do at Iowa Regionals and at Iowa HP Camp, she has the physicality to put herself with some of the other top outside attackers in Eastern Iowa. Meier has carried a bulk of the scoring for Hempstead this season and is continuing to improve with her all-around game in the backcourt as well.
Abby Hamann – Grundy Center
Hamann is leading an attack for Grundy Center who is really coming on strong, ranked 6th in Class 2A in the latest IGHSAU rankings. Hamman is averaging over three kills per set while there are four other attackers with 90 plus kills.
