Brooke Mulholland has been one of the top all around players in the Class of 2020, spending most of her time as a setter, but has been known to take a few swings as well. Either way, Mulholland has been a leader on and off the court in her community. With her high school volleyball career winding, down Mulholland recently verbally committed to Kirkwood Community College, in Cedar Rapids. A top volleyball program at the NJCAA Division 2 level where she will be able to make an immediate impact as well as compete for a national title. Here is a little more about Brooke, her volleyball career, her college decision, as well as some fun questions as well.
How did you get your start in volleyball? Was there anyone who was really pivotal in your development as an athlete?
I started playing club volleyball when I was in 4th grade, but grew up with the sport because my older sister played, and my mom coached, so volleyball has basically always consumed my life. In my development as an athlete, there have been many coaches that have influenced my life, but there has been two main people that have influenced it the most. My high school volleyball coach Micah Cewe gave me the chance to run a 5-1 as a sophomore and has always believed in me and pushed me throughout my high school career. Also, this past year I was able to be coached by Nick Lynch, who turned into be my role model and a huge inspiration in my life. He taught me what true passion for something is, and to always keep working on my goals and aspirations. I will never forget the impact these two coaches have made on my life.
What was the recruiting process like for you? What were some of the factors that you considered when making a decision?
The recruiting process was really confusing for me at first because college coaches would contact me and I wasn’t really sure what to say or how to talk to them, but eventually, after I had some experience with phone calls and talking in person it got easier. When I got set up with Lauren Hansen (MyRecruitingAssistant), she was able to do a lot for me that I wasn’t able to do on my own. Some of the biggest factors I considered when choosing a college was the cost, how well I thought I would fit with the team, how much I thought I connected with the coach, and then if it fit well with what I want to pursue academically.
How did you know Kirkwood was the place? I know there were probably plenty of schools along the way, but how did you know when to make the decision?
I have been talking to the Kirkwood coaches for over a year now, and for awhile I was very anxious about the transferring process after Kirkwood since it’s a 2 year school, so that is why I took so long to commit. After I considered all of my options and put all of my main factors for a school that I wanted in consideration, I knew Kirkwood was the best option for me. I also loved the coaches and it just felt like home to me.
Whats after Kirkwood? What are you hoping that playing for a top junior college program can do for you athletically and academically?
After Kirkwood I have nothing planned besides knowing that I do want to transfer and still play college volleyball, but I am not worried since I have a lot of time to figure out where I want to go. I am hoping that I can develop more as an athlete and as a volleyball player while keeping school and my grades a priority. I am really excited to train with such a great coaching staff and program, and can’t wait for what’s ahead in my future.
