#3 seed Bruning-Davenport-Shickley (30-4) Vs #5 Humphrey St. Francis (24-5)
As the first game of Championship Saturday, the fans and players showed up to the “black” court at Devaney Sports Center. The Nebraska Huskers unveiled this court during two matches this season to great reviews, making for a great day of state volleyball championships.
In set one, a quick start by Bruning-Davenport-Shickley and junior hitter Macy Kamler (30 kills, 19 digs) lead to a 20-9 advantage and then the momentum changed as it often does in the game of volleyball. BDS won the game to 10, 15, and 20 points easily, but The Flyers of Humphrey St. Francis went on an 11-0 run behind the serving of freshman Kylee Wessel (9 kills, 3 aces, 18 digs) to tie the set at 20. Tied at 24, the Eagles prevailed with a Kamler kill and Flyer hitting error to close out the set 26-24.
Set two, the Eagles started strong and kept the momentum this time on their way to a 25-16 win.
St. Francis finally found their rythym in sets three and four. Lead by kills from junior Allison Wiedner (15 kills, 17 digs) and senior Caitlin Jarosz (14 kills, 16 digs), the Flyers capitalized on serve receive and unforced errors on the BDS side, winning 25-19 and 25-18.
But the experience of BDS hitter Kamler and setter/hitter senior Reagan Alfs (20 kills, 29 assists, 23 digs) proved to be too much for the Flyers in the fifth. Trading points until 8-8, BDS started pulling away to 11-8 and 14-9 leads with kills from the duo. With 5 match points ahead of them, BDS couldn’t contain Wiedner’s net play to tie it 14-14. Giving a final push, BDS prevailed on kills by Alfs and Kamler to win, 16-14.
BDS, coached by Kari Jo Alfs, wins back-to-back championship in 2018 and 2019. They were runner up in 2013.
Humphrey St. Francis Flyer, lead by coach Dean Korus for 33 seasons, finishes the season at 24-5 and the Class D-2 State Runner Up. The Flyers with the champion plaque in 2000, 2004, and 2005, and runner-up in 1993, 1994, 2006, and 2007.
