Continue ReadingSetting is an art form. Being able to get the ball to attackers is one thing, but being able to lead, read the other side of the net, and know who to set when and with what tempo is another thing. At our Top 250s coming up in December, there will be plenty of setters who can put the ball on point and also do a little bit of attacking themselves.
Wisconsin
Josie Halbleib – Sun Prairie – FC Elite
Halbleib is one of the top available setters in the state of Wisconsin at 6’2 left-handed, athletic, dynamic, you name it. She has been part of back to back state tournament appearances for Sun Prairie the past two years and will be a new addition to the FC Elite 18 Elite squad this upcoming club season.
Katharine Gund – Pewaukee – Milwaukee Sting
Koss #5Steady, solid, and all-around strong, Gund played a key part for Pewaukee this past season as a setter. With pinpoint placement and a great knack for who to set and when, Gund is one who is a major sleeper to keep track of in the Class of 2022.
Rachel Koss – Freedom – FC Elite
Koss is so smooth for only being a Freshman who can run an offense. She was part of an upstart Freedom team that was full of youth that had a breakout season, including finding themselves in the top ten rankings in Division 2. She will be setting her club and high school teammate Sydney Bartels who is another really dynamic Class of 2023 athlete who can attack in the front row.
Maddy Fortune – McFarland – Balance
Fortune was able to play a big part for McFarland in their run to the state championship match where she teamed up with her sister Lizzy, who finished her career with a silver ball. Maddy was able to play right-back and do some setting, where she will take on a bigger setting role with her Balance 16s club team with some top Madison area players.
Iowa
Ellie Bobinet – Osage – Flight
BobinetBobinet is relatively new to running the show as a 5-1 setter, but in her first season as a full time setter she racked up nearly 1200 assists with over 11 per set. Bobinet is extremely solid all around, with experience playing multiple positions on the court. This past season she led Osage to the state semifinals in Class 2A.
Annabelle Costello – Davenport Assumption – Iowa Select
Costello showed great promise last club season when she set for the Iowa Select 16s team which translated into a successful season for Davenport Assumption where she was part of their state tournament team as well as one of the top teams in the MAC. She tallied over 500 assists and nearly 300 digs this past club season. She will have two of her top targets joining in Emma and Ava Schubert who are also part of Davenport Assumption and Iowa Select.
Taylor Grinley – Gilbert – CIA
Grinley is long, athletic, and has great hands where she is able to dish and attack. This past high school season she set and played right side for Gilbert who tallied over 30 wins. Grinley puts up a strong block and has a great knack for the court. She set a 5-1 last year for CIA 16 Black and will be looking to do so at the 17s level as well.
Elise Mehaffy – Marion – Iowa Rockets (Title Photo Left)
Mehaffy brings a calming presence to the court as well as a high IQ with pinpoint accuracy to her attackers. As a setter on Marion’s state semifinal team in Class 4A, Maffy was also able to attack as well. On the season she tallied nearly 500 assists, 250 digs, and just under 200 kills. Definitely a swiss army knife kind of player.
Minnesota
Olivia Koeppen – Minnetonka – M1 (Title Photo Right)
Koeppen will be a treat to hit from as she is coming off a state tournament appearance with Minnetonka where they finished in the final four. Koeppen dazzled the field with a combined 100 plus assists in the first two rounds with 57 against Moorhead and followed up with 52 against Eagan ‘ last=”]’ last=”]. She’s played in big matches against high level competition, knowing what it takes for her side of the net to score points.
Karsee Kampsen – BBE – Kandi Elite
Kampsen brings multiple ways to the court in how she can create a lot of positive touches. A left-handed swiss army knife, Kampsen is someone who can set, swing, and defend. She has the ability to set and I could even see be a libero a the next level with her athleticism. Either way a really solid athlete to have in the gym.
Marissa Teorey – HLWW – Northern Lights
Teorey is well trained, fundamentally sound, and a setter with a high IQ who knows how to run the show. She will bring a dynamic skill set to the Minnesota Top 250. She is one to keep tabs on this club season from the Class of 2021.
