Started by the philosophy to work together to make volleyball great, Husker Volleyball Coach from 1977-1999 Terry Pettit instilled a vision that continues on throughout the coaches, players, and fans today.
In realizing the responsibility to the players, coaches not only work diligently on fundamentals but also learning the mental aspects of the game. Coaches realize each player in the program proves to have an integral part of the future on the court, classroom, and beyond school.
In the last few years, Husker Volleyball Coach from 1999-present John Cook started implementing sports psychology into his plan. With team chemistry essential in any sport, players and coaches learn how other players might handle certain situations differently and how to learn from each other.
As coaches, players, and fans continue to be students of the game, searching for ways to learn has never been easier with technology today. Books on leadership and coaching can be found in the bookstore or even online. But a new way of studying the game is through Podcasts.
Podcasts are a free service that allows internet users to listen to audio files on a computer or mobile device. Like a radio show available to listen to at any time.
This fall Terry Pettit started a podcast line of his own, “Inside the Coaching Mind.” In each podcast, he interviews different volleyball greats in the state of Nebraska; Husker Coach John Cook, Creighton Coach Kerstin Bernthal Booth, Grand Island Central Catholic Coach Sharon Zavala, Grand Island Senior High Coach Bill Root, public address announcer John Baylor, Omaha Skutt Catholic Coach Renee Saunders, and himself.
As Pettit interviews 2019 Class C2 State Champion GICC coach Sharon Zavala, in her 45th season, he asks what she says to her team after a loss. Zavala replies that she waits to talk to her team after a loss until the next practice in order to analyze the game and let emotions calm. Grand Island Coach Bill Root, newly retired from coaching after 20 seasons at GISH and 20 seasons at Giltner, commented that the technical part of the game has changed and that the players control the game rather than the officials and the game is so much faster than it used to be.
In addition, John Cook and his daughter former Husker All American Lauren Cook West started “Conversations with the Cooks.” They give educational insight into the current and past teams and add a bit of insider information.
