With plenty who have committed and many more who will be heavily recruited this upcoming club season, it makes for an exciting time when it comes to bid chasing in the Iowa Region as well as other national qualifiers held across the country. With some additions to various clubs, there are plenty who will be trying to make 2020 a “Bid” year for their squad.
YamilkoskiSix Pack
Six Pack 16s took home the Iowa Region title last year with a win over Central Iowa Select in the finals. With being so close to snagging an Open bid (the highest level at USAV Nationals), the 2020 Six Pack 17U squad will be in heavy contention for an Open bid. They will return Xavier High School teammates Eve Magill (Creighton) and Jaz Yamilkoski (Tennesee Tech) as well as Drake commit, Ashlynn Kuhn from Hudson. However, this upcoming season there will be some added depth and height with Western Illinois commit Hailey Pollock of Clear Creek-Amana, a key contributor as a middle blocker as well as two outside hitters in Elyse Winter of Xavier and Saari Kuehl of Gladbrook-Reinbeck. Winter and Kuehl are some of the top 2021 available outside hitters that can score in the front and backrow.
Club Ignit Select
Club Ignit Select will have a large contingent of athletes who were on the Central Iowa Select 16M squad form 2019 where they earned an American bid after finishing runner-up at Iowa Regionals. This squad has a heavy roster of athletes from Dowling Catholic who has been to the state tournament in Class 5A the past two seasons. Anna Flynn is back at libero along with Sophia Painovich setting. Faith DeRonde is a top Class of 2022 attacker who will be on the squad along with a strong addition in Alysen Dexter of Des Moines Christian who was an All-Distrcit athlete as well.
GreenIowa Power Plex
Power Plex just missed out last year, but will have a really strong 17s team with some major additions. A lot of power in the middle with Grace Evans of Dowling Catholic who has committed to Belmont is back and will have Layanna Green of Waukee out of the middle as well. Green is a rising 2021 prospect and is one of the most explosive players in the state. Morgan Middleton of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows will be coming to Power Plex after a big high school season which included a state record for kills in a three set match, she will be heading to North Dakota State.
CostelloIowa Select
This team is going to be extremely gritty with plenty of defense and firepower from the pins. After earning a bid to nationals in 2019, this group will feature some of the top athletes out of the Quad Cities with Emma Schubert leading the way on the pin. Schubert can score in any rotation and will be with her high school teammate, Annabelle Costello, a Class of 2021 setter where the two were key in Assumptions run to the state tournament.
CIA
Always full of athletes who are well rounded in all skills, CIA will look to punch a ticket this year. Returning will be a solid first two contacts in Emmy Wedgbury of Cedar Falls at libero and Taylor Grinley of Gilbert setting. A key addition to this team will be Corinne Meier of Dubuque Hempstead who gained valuable experience playing with the Iowa High-Performance program this summer. Meier is an athletic, six rotation outside who can really pack a punch with her swing. Class of 2022 athletes Kaebre Sullivan and Meredith Street of Osage will be key pieces to this team as well.
Iowa Rockets
Grinley setting for CIAAlways a top team among the region, Iowa Rockets will have plenty of athleticism on both pins with the likes of Martha Pace of West Liberty and Katy Garrison of Xavier. Another couple athletes to keep tabs on throughout the season is Sydney Beasley who comes from Darlington, Wisconsin as well as libero Addie Schmierer who was key in the run to state for Iowa City Liberty this past high school season as libero.
Adrenaline
Adrenaline has typically gone the JVA/AAU route for nationals, but they are going to be contending for a USA bid this year with a schedule full of qualifiers and top events around the Midwest. Class of 2021 athletes Lauren Schrock (Iowa), Sydney Dennis (Iowa), and Natalie Welch, Jorie Randall, and Ella Pettinger will play on the 18s, but Adrenaline 17 Doug will have a strong core of all around athletes. Hailey Ikeda will be a strong up and coming setter and will be receiving a solid first contact from the likes of Trinity Zika of Marion who was an All State libero as well as Kelsey Koberg of Xavier.
