As part of the Top 250 structure, Prep Dig and Coach Jeanne Czipri of Central College who served as lead coach for the event set up multiple drills that allowed for athletes to showcase their overall athleticism and all-around style. From there, athletes are seen not by position, but as a volleyball player as a whole with multiple skills. These drills allowed us to see multiple athletes for what we call our “All Around Team” from the Iowa Prep Dig Top 250.
Elise Mehaffy – Marion – Iowa Rockets
Mehaffy was an all-around player this season for Marion who qualified for the state tournament. Solid in defense, but can score from the pin while also putting up a great ball as a setter. Mehaffy makes drills that require all-around skill look really easy (which they aren’t). Always under control, efficient, high IQ, and a knack for positive touches is the name to her game.
Emmy Wedgbury – Cedar Falls – CIA
Always fun to see where Wedgbury will be playing on the court because she can do it all depending on where her team needs her. Wedgbury is always solid and dependable as a DS or libero which is where she will play this upcoming club season, but she was a right side on the Cedar Falls state championship team this past season. With a background in beach, Wedgbury has great hands and is very under control with her platform which makes her ultra-efficient out of system.
Nessa Johnson – Gilbert – PowerPlex
Johnson teamed up with Taylor Grinley who was also at the Top 250 for Gilbert this past season to run a 6-2 for a team that won 30 matches. Johnson is a solid all around athlete and with a left handed swing which is always a great option where she can set or swing. She often times found herself on the winning side of the court for 3 on 3 Queens with two contacts. Her athleticism and ability to keep the rally alive is really fun to watch.
Kiersten Schmitt – Beckman – DBQ Elite
Schmitt is long and athletic – a threat no matter where she is in the front row and very solid in the backrow. This past season she was on the state runner-up Beckman squad where she contributed in multiple ways, including taking on some setting duties. The ceiling is so high for Schmitt, who plays well above the net, has great timing and form when it comes to blocking, and is so smooth on the court – keep tabs on this Class of 2022 all-around athlete.
Sullivan Street
Meredith Street – Osage – CIA
Kaebre Sullivan – Osage – CIA
Street can put the hammer down, lightning in a bottle. Sullivan is long, athletic, and is an all around player who is really dynamic in the middle. The two team up on the beach and it definitely shows. Street covers quite the range in the backrow, but can just sky to put a ball down with authority. Sullivan is so under control and efficient where she can play a backcourt game as well. Osage brought a really strong crew consisting of their final four in Class 2A Varsity squad that will be a force in 2020.
Halia Mahi – Cedar Falls – CIA
Mahi may be one of the best beach prospects to come out of Iowa. From the Class of 2021, Mahi take the high school season to extend her beach season. Her ability to move around the court and put up a really clean ball to hit is a plus for her teammates.
