This past weekend, I got to see some new athletes I had not seen play live as well as some Class of 2022 and 2023 athletes who are just getting their recruiting process starting. As for the Class of 2020 and 2021 there are plenty of athletes who would make a great fit at the next level. Here are some new names to know heading into the 2020 club season.
Kinsie Zinnel – Boone – Iowa Heart
Zinnel came into the event with a ton of momentum after her high school season where she earned Class 4A All District honors. As a libero, she reads incredibly well, under control, and is pretty crafty seeing the other side of the court. Whether it’s passing in serve receive or defending a swing with some pace, she can do a little bit of everything, a game-changer.
Alia Vanderhoef – Iowa City High – Iowa Rockets
At 5’9, Vanderhoef is a pin who can do a little bit of everything. She brings a really live arm where she can go at multiple angles and was really solid when she could showcase her all-around ability.
Grace Ehret – Williamsburg – Iowa Rockets
Iowa Rockets had a strong showing on Saturday with Grace Ehret being one of them. A crafty setter who can put up a good ball for her hitters to terminate, she is also left-handed and isn’t afraid of being offensive to find the open spot on the court.
Brynn Smith – AGWSR – CIA
Smith has quickness that is tough to match, she moves like a water beetle on the court where she can defend, set, and attack. She was one of many CIA players who could really show an all-around game. She is from the Class of 2023 and again, a strong Class of 2023 from CIA that can defend and be a strong presence in the Iowa Region.
Haley Ikeda – Cedar Rapids Prairie – Adrenaline (Title Photo)
When I am at an event like the Top 250 people probably think I’m just going crazy texting people on my phone – HA! I am writing down player numbers and notes and next to #18 I wrote in all caps EFFORT! That would be Ikeda from Prairie High School and Adrenaline where she will set. Keep an eye on Adrenaline 17 Doug, some really talented athletes on this team for 2020.
Annie Stotlar – Bettendorf – Iowa Select
Love Stotlar’s style of play. She is the type of athlete where you can put her in any position and she is going to find a way to make some positive touches. Extremely athletic and dynamic on the pin, but also a really strong backcourt player where she can defend and swing too.
Piper Frost – Cedar Falls – CIA
Yep, Cedar Falls has more athletes coming down the line. Frost is an athlete who will be able to defend, but no only defend – she has a voice. I was really impressed with how she communicated with attackers, was praising other athletes’ effort, and just had a really great court presence and for being only a Freshman – that speaks volumes.
Lauren Brown – Underwood
Seniors – It’s not too late! Brown made a major impact on Saturday as a 2020 middle. At 5’9, she has the athleticism, lateral quickness, and high IQ to make the smart shots she needs to score points. A great athlete, positive body language, and works extremely hard to get to the ball to get a touch on the block.
