2020 Club Preview: Huron Valley Volleyball Club

<p><strong>Huron Valley Volleyball Club </strong>is a smaller program from the Ann Arbor area, but the early 2020 season is bringing some positive results.</p> <p>HVVC fields national teams in the 17’s, 16’s and 15’s and each has the potential for some big things this year. A lot of familiarity within the roster should help HVVC have solid team chemistry. The key will be for continued improvement throughout the year to raise their level of play. HVVC is going to be challenged with each event, but it has the opportunity to break out this year in the in-state club picture.</p> <p><strong>17 BLUE</strong></p> <p>Chris Cristian is the head coach of this team, which is having a lot of success in the early portion of the 2020 club season. 17 Blue opened with a 3-0 start in the Michiana Open Power League earlier this month and is coming off a 5-1 record at the Central Zone Invitational last week, placing fifth in the 17 Club Blue division. This team has a lot of great chemistry, likely due to their close connections. Five of the 10 on the roster come from Saline, a team that was consistently in the middle of our Division 1 team rankings. Included in that group is middle <strong>Emma Rigg</strong>, who led the Hornets in blocks this past fall and was a top hitting option. Joining Rigg from Saline is setter <strong>Abigail Zambeck</strong>, outside <strong>Bryn Batten</strong>, OH/DS <strong>Abby Kreuzer</strong> and L/DS <strong>Neeka Meyer-Beltman. </strong>The team also has outside <strong>Jordan Kless</strong>, RS/S <strong>Hannah Bernstein</strong>, setter <strong>Charlotte Yeiter</strong>, and libero/DS options <strong>Gabrielle Hall-Vit </strong>and <strong>Leah (Mae) Veidlinger</strong>. The results have spoken for themselves thus far for 17 Blue. They aren’t just winning, they are dominating for long stretches. They should be encouraged by the first month of the season and ride that momentum into a successful club year.</p> <p><strong>16 BLUE</strong></p> <p>Steve Wheeler coaches 16 Blue this club season and it has had mixed results in the early stages of 2020. They split their matches in the opening weekend of the Michiana Open Power League and then went 3-3 in last week’s Central Zone Invitational, placing ninth in the 16 Club White division. HVVC has a sound mix of players on this roster. They haven’t looked overwhelmed or truly outmatched, so it’s just a matter of them locking in the finer details for them to really hit their stride. The back row of <strong>Avery Goodrich</strong>, <strong>Rachel Hein </strong>and <strong>Megan O’Neil </strong>will be crucial pieces to the team. Always facing strong serving and hitting, it will be up to the primary passers to keep 16 Blue in system and be able to work with the hitters. <strong>Ellie McGlashen </strong>has the setting duties for the team and she has a deep bench of arms to work with. <strong>Nora Halloran </strong>and <strong>Beth Ann Ford </strong>will handle the middle while <strong>Julia Munday</strong>, <strong>Maanya Tarnal</strong>, <strong>Lana Koutali</strong>, <strong>Makenzie Roehner</strong> and <strong>Jamie Giese</strong> are all options on the outside.</p> <p><strong>15 BLUE</strong></p> <p>Rachel Cornish is the head coach for 15 Blue, which is off to a great start for itself with a 6-0 record thus far. The six wins came as par of the Mizuno Lake Erie Club Power League earlier in the month. Their first tournament will be the Presidents Day Challenge in a couple of weeks. With a young squad, positions aren’t entirely defined. A lot of the players have multiple designations and could be moving around the court throughout the club season until coaches find the right mix.
