Continue ReadingThe 2020 club season is ready to go! With players on new teams, new up and coming clubs, there is plenty to be written over the next few months on the Iowa club scene. This weekend will kickoff the season in Cedar Falls when Six Pack will host their invite with teams across the state getting a chance to make an early statement on the 2020 season. Who will be some of the athletes to watch in the 16s Division on Sunday, January 5.
Morgan Brandt – Sumner-Fredericksburg – Six Pack 16
The Iowa State commit will be looking to lead her team this season with her athleticism and ability to control the game with her second contact whether that is dishing or attacking. Brandt makes an impact offensively and defensively with the ability to put up a big block as well making her someone the other side of the net always has to be aware of.
Avery Beckett – Waverly-Shell Rock – Six Pack 16 (Title Photo)
Beckett had a breakout season for WSR which landed them in the Class 4A state tournament. Beckett has quite the upside with her ability to score points from the pin. A high touch with her jumping ability, Becket and Brandt will be a combo that teams will definitely have to key on.
Alexis Moses – Cedar Rapids Prairie – Iowa Rockets 16R
Moses is a major threat along the next with her physicality offensively and defensively. The South Dakota commit connects extremely well with setter, Kora Ruff and will be able to run multiple routes and tempos to score points. When Moses can run the slide, that really stretches the defense to allow pins such as Macy Daufeldt, Ella McLaughlin, and Calia Clubb to do some damage.
Ava Schubert – Assumption – Iowa Select 16 Mizuno
Bahl of DBQ EliteSchubert played on the 16 Mizuno squad last year as an 8th grader and will be doing so again, still playing up an age group. Iowa Select always has a strong presence out of the Quad Cities with athletes from both sides of the river. Schubert will be a big block on the right side and always has a hammer of a swing with her left hand. She will look to develop into a strong backrow attacker as well in 2020.
Meredith Bahl – Western Dubuque – DBQ Elite 16-1 National
Bahl is just a fun player to watch after leading her team to a state runner up finish in Class 4A. Springy, athletic, and just solid as a six rotation outside who can pass to attack with ease. With some of the top players out of the Dubuque area DBQ Elite will be one to watch in 2020.
Carly Puffer – Tipton – Iowa Rockets 16-1
Puffer was a key piece to the puzzle for Tipton and their run to be one of the top teams in the state throughout the 2019 high school season. She can play out of the middle and could also be a presence on the right side. She will get to team up with some of the top players in Eastern Iowa for a really deep Iowa Rockets 16s age group. This 16-1 team will be extremely diverse with their all around play that will also have setting and outside combos in Elise Mehaffy and Ella Caffery.
