As far as Michigan, I know the typical household names of the Murray sisters as well as the O’Gorman duo. I was so impressed with Julia Bishop last year in how she just took command of the court last year for Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno (now playing for 17 Mizuno). This weekend at Triple Crown I was looking for the new names, the players who just kind of popped out when I wasn’t expecting it. I’ll admit, I haven’t done much research on these athletes beyond what I see on AES or their club website, but what I do know is that they were impressive this past weekend at Triple Crown in Kansas City.
Josie Bloom – Legacy 16-1 Adidas
Bloom in blue.So smooth. Bloom makes playing libero look easy with how she just glides across the floor and is so relaxed with her platform. She is rock solid in serve receive and can take pace off of a hard driven ball. I really like her presence on the court with her positive body language, never gets rattled and is just a steady force. Michigan colleges will be happy to keep her in state with the total package she would bring to a program.
Sarah Sylvester – Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno
For Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno, the pieces are definitely in place for a big season, that goes with the high expectations already put on them after a final four finish at AAU’s last season. Serena Nyambio and Ava Brizard are big names from this team, but another middle that is showing great promise is Sarah Sylvester. She brings a big block and is a major defensive presence along the net as a middle. Once her offensive game continues to develop she will be really tough to contain out of the middle.
Jenna Reitsma – FaR Out 18 Black
I remember watching Reitsma at the end of the club season and thought, “Wow”. Seeing her again this past weekend I saw an even stronger and more athletic Reitsma who is heading to Marquette in Milwaukee, joining a really strong recruiting class for 2021 which includes the top libero in Wisconsin, two of the top middles in Wisconsin, and one of the top all around athletes in the Wisconsin as an incoming setter. She has a bright future not only to finish out high school, but heading to the next level as well.
Aly Borellis – Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno
Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno celebratingBorellis puts up a great ball for her attackers, but she also has a certain all around game where she can do a lot of different things for her team from playing solid defense, blocking, and she could even put up a swing as well. She will be the quarterback of this team and once they get their high tempo offense running and clicking, they will be dangerous. 16 Mizuno has a big March with the Sunshine Qualifier, MEQ, and the So Cal Qualifier which is held in Vegas.
Alli Wiese – FaR Out 18 Black
FaR Out 18 Black is another team who has a major target on their back with the top players from the Class of 2020, 2021, and even Maradith O’Gorman from the Class of 2022. Wiese is staying in state to play for D2 power in Hillsdale College. She is consistent, steady, and knows how to anticipate to get a hard driven swing to keep everything in system for FaR Out. Having a libero who just keeps everyone under control is extremely underrated.
Bianca Giglio – Legacy 16-1 Adidas
Huge arm. Giglio is really able to power down the line or take whatever the defense gives her when she is on the right side. She is athletic and dynamic where she can do a variety of things that are positive for her team. This Legacy squad runs a 6-2 which allows for multiple attackers to do damage to the other side of the net.
Mikayla Haut – Michigan Elite 17 Mizuno
I remember Haut from last year, but seeing her this weekend she looked like a different player. Jumping higher, scoring points, and just an extra element of explosiveness and athleticism. Haut is a really dynamic outside hitter who the other side always has to be aware of. She can hit a variety of shots from the pin, but she can also score points from the backcourt.
MVA 18 BlackAshley Slater – Michigan Volleyball Academy 18 Black
Dirty jump serve. Slater is an outside hitter who is committed to Wake Forest, but she was going on point scoring runs with a high powered top spin jump serve for MVA. The typical serve athletes see are a jump float which those are tough in itself, but to receive a hard driven top spin serve that dances a little bit across the net really puts a lot of pressure on the first contact.
Cari Bohm – Legacy 16-1 Adidas
Bohm is going to be scary good. At 6’4, Bohm has the size, but she is really athletic where she can hit a variety of tempos. Defensively, she is a major presence at the net as a middle blocker. She is the type of athlete who could score points and contribute out of the middle or I could see her on the right side shutting down an outside hitter and just blasting away, really fun player to watch.
Karlee Stoll – Legacy 16-1 Adidas
All it took was one play to write her name down. In Legacy’s match against Illini Elite, Illini Elite sent a free ball to Stoll to take her out of system, but she sent it right back to the deep corner to score a point for Legacy. Sure, it’s just one point, but that was a major momentum swing for Legacy who would go on to win the match in three sets. Stoll has the high IQ to dissect the other side of the net and put her hitters in a position to score points and be successful.
