The city is located around thirty-one miles northwest from the center of downtown San Antonio and has a population of around 17,000. The Greyhounds are led by 2015 Boerne ISD Teacher of the year Tisha Pettibon. She has been at the helm for the last 11 years and the community loves her. They have made it to the playoffs in each of the last nine years. Coach Pettibon and her crew have reached the area playoffs for the last two years. The up and coming Greyhound athletes are looking to continue that streak this coming season. They finished second in district just behind 4A powerhouse Wimberley last season. With the crop of young players she has coming in, they are looking to be district champs.
We had a chance to sit down with Coach Pettibon this past week and discussed her school program a bit. Here is just a little from our conversation:
Prep Dig TX: What do you love about Boerne High School?
Coach Pettibon: At Boerne High our student athletes are top notch. The girls are role models in the classroom and they challenge each other to be great every day. The girls work hard in the weight room, on the track, and on the court. The girls don’t complain, they just show up every practice ready to get better. The parents support the coaches and allow us to lead them and teach them about leadership and teamwork. We are very blessed to coach and live in such a great community.
Prep Dig TX: What is your coaching philosophy and how do you apply it to your teams?
Coach Pettibon: My coaching philosophy starts with setting team goals, motivating our team to outwork our opponents, show them that we are dedicated to their success, and help them become leaders athletically to achieve their individual and team goals. In the end, we coach to build relationships and teach student athletes about hard work and dedication. We want our girls to be leaders in our community, as well as when they leave and pursue their goals in college or the workforce. We want them to know that we care and will always be there for them through the good times and the bad times. We win together, we lose together.
Prep Dig TX: What is your expectation for 28-4A district play this coming season?
Coach Pettibon: Our expectation is first and foremost to compete for a district championship. We are part of a competitive district with Wimberley, Canyon Lake, Fredericksburg, and Bandera.
Athletes to watch for:
Photo Credit: SportsRecruits – AlamoMadisyn Jones [2023] 5-8 Setter (HS: Boerne/Club: Alamo)
When we first published our State Rankings, we did not have Madisyn listed, but after watching and analyzing hours of her game film, she will definitely be in our State Rankings for the 2023 class when we publish the updates in June. As a setter, the ball comes off of her hands so smoothly in all locations along the net. She utilizes her Jump-set very effectively to keep the defense off-balance. She has great upper body control while setting which helps her location be extremely accurate. She plays club for a very impressive Alamo program who is nationally known and she runs that show as well. Last year as a Freshman, Maddie earned District 28-4A Newcomer of the Year, Academic All-District, Prep Volleyball Frosh59-Honorable Mention, and Academic All-District. You will be hearing her name a lot in the coming years.
Lauren Roberts [2023] 5-11 Right Side (HS: Boerne/Club: Alamo)
This young and fiery left-handed attacker has all of the tools to grow into a great playmaker for Boerne High for the next three years. While she is still growing into her frame, she hits the ball at an extremely high contact point, which will make it difficult to stop her attacks. She has many weapons in her offensive arsenal, but she regularly swings line to score for her club team on the right side. This past season she earned All-District Honorable Mention and Academic All-District for the Greyhounds.
Addison Amick [2021] 5-6 Libero (HS: Boerne/Club: Ignite)
This competitive firecracker of a player plays with a lot of passion. She has been an all-around hitter in past years for club but is the Libero for the Greyhounds. Addison has great footwork and is very active on the court. She communicates very well on the court with her teammates. She reads the game like a coach does. It is very refreshing to see a player be that involved in the game while its being played. Last year she earned 2nd Team All-District and Academic All-District. The Greyhounds will rely on her leadership on the court.
Kendra Schwarz [2021] 5-11 Middle/Outside (HS: Boerne/Club: SA Force)
This swing blocking middle plays with a lot of passion as well. She has the ability to hit to both corners out of the middle, which helps her offensive efficiency. She is superb at hitting the cut back shot to zone one. Kendra also utilizes her lower body very well at the net loading up to block. While being slightly undersized at the middle position for the next level, she could easily play on the pins or in the back row for a small college program as she has excellent ball control also. She will be a go to player for Madisyn Jones to set in the front row. The Greyhounds will be looking for her senior leadership in order to be in the hunt for a district crown.
