Admittedly, the hype around the 2019 season for the C1 Lincoln Lutheran Warriors was real! Finishing 3rd in 2017 and runner up in 2018, expectations were high and they were achieved as the Warriors took home the top trophy in 2019.
Coach Sue Ziegler sums up the 2019 championship best, “It could not have had a better or more fitting ending for this team. They played so well together as a team, as they were very encouraging, and really pushed each other to be better every practice/set/match. They exuded a confidence in them, as they did not get shaken even when behind, and we could trust them to fight to the finish and give it their best effort. So after losing the first set in the State Championship match, they worked that much harder to come back to win 3-1.”
After a 37-3 record in 2019 the Warriors take a 17 match win streak into the 2020 season. Coach Ziegler has a compiled record of 416-197 after 22 years at the helm. After recent graduation, the team will look much different.
Coach on graduating and filling the voids, “We are all very much looking forward to this season, coaches and players alike. Of course State kills leader OH Marriah Buss Marriah Buss 6'1" | OH Lincoln Lutheran | 2020 State NE graduated, along with some other key seniors, Lexie Kreizel Lexie Kreizel Lincoln Lutheran | 2020 NE at libero, Paige Trutna as one of the setters in the 6-2, and right side Sami Scholz. However, we bring back a lot of experience in 5 of the players. There are also players that had very successful JV seasons, so they should fill in quite nicely. These are all great players to coach, and they have a passion for volleyball, set high goals, and work really hard in the off-season.
The current Lutheran players are used to going to state and have the experience. Many younger players and a recent 6’4 transfer look to fill in the holes for Lutheran in 2020. To hear more, vote this team to Round 2!

Ashlyn’s comments: “As an incoming freshman, I had played mostly setter and right side, but our varsity team had lots of talent. I was willing to do whatever the team needed to earn playing time and contribute. Coach gave me an opportunity as a middle in only our second game and I stayed a starter all the way through to our State Championship match with Wahoo. It was a new experience, but one that helped me build confidence and prepared me for our championship run as a Sophmore. This time, I moved back to my familiar position as a S/ RS and got the opportunity to play six rotations. I have gained a huge passion for setting and have been working at it all summer. I can’t wait for this season to start!”

Player Summary and Outlook:
Started as OH2, over 200 kills
2019 Stats:
Kills/Set, Total, Hitting Percentage: 2.8, 198, .227
Abby’s comments: “Perfect preparation prevents poor performance”. I think this fits our team well because our coach is always pushing us to go as hard as we can and give all effort all of the time, without practices like these I don’t think we could’ve made it to state. Even though these hard conditioning practices might not be our favorite I think my whole team can agree it’s these practices that make us better and best prepare us for the tiring five-set games that comes down to what team wants it more.”

Mara’s comments: “It will definitely have a different vibe without some of our seniors, but most of us already have a strong connection. I don’t think it will be hard to include new players this year, we all just need to have the same mindset.”
⇒Addi Ernstmeyer | 2021 | 5’9″ OH
Player Summary and Outlook:
Played a backup role as OH last season
Addi’s comments: “Being a part of the 2019 team that won state. Words can not describe how incredible it felt to be at Devaney playing for a state title, while being surrounded by so many loving families and friends who have supported your team since the first game of the season.”
