Top Setters in the Class of 2021 Volume 2

Setting seems to be a thankless position. It is in my opinon, the toughest thing to do on a volleyball court. Without a great setter to run the show, even high-powered offenses will stall. The setter should be an extension of the coach on the court. They are able to decipher in a very short time who to set, when to set them and what will score.

These young ladies who I am about to discuss are widely considered some of the best to do this in the Great State of Texas. And they got here with countless lessons, practices and matches over many years. Lets meet some of them.

[player_tooltip player_id="87438" first="Annie" last="Antar"] [2021] 5-11 Setter (HS: Klein/Club: Houston Juniors/Verbal: North Florida)

She plays for one of the best programs in the Houston area in Houston Juniors. They constantly push out great players to the next level. Annie has had a very great school campaign over her past three years. This past year her Klein Bearkats were led by [player_tooltip player_id="87438" first="Annie" last="Antar"]’s 491 kills and 620 assists going into the playoffs. She is looking to do even more damage in her senior season. We are looking forward to covering her and her amazing teammates at Klein. We like the way she hodls her posture a the net. She’s always ready to press over and seal the net on the block. She is a valuable asset with her size and will do great things for the North Florida program in a few years as she is able to play all the way around and is a viable threat to score when attacking.

[player_tooltip player_id="87444" first="Chloe" last="Alderson"] [2021] 5-9 Setter (HS: Richland/Club: Eagle Mountain/Verbal: Arkansas-Fort Smith)

Chloe plays with a ton of passion for her small club in North Texas. She has good size and good power to move the ball to either pin whether in system or out of system. She does a great job of keeping her opponent off balance by constantly moving the ball around to a variety of hitters. She is also very active on defense and in hitter coverage as she is always moving somewhere to make a play. This means she has great court vision and a high volleyball IQ. Her eyesight is always moving to see what the opponent is going to do. We think she will do great things at the next level.

[player_tooltip player_id="87445" first="Xuan" last="Nguyen"] [2021] 5-5 Setter (HS: Lebanon Trail/Club: Dallas Skyline/Verbal: Davidson)

Not as tall as her counterparts in this article, however, she makes up for that lack of size in her ability to move on the court. Her footwork is superb and is able to be in great position to set a good ball. She has great location on her pin sets. She is able to hit the same spot multiple times in a row. This is why she will be playing at the next level in a few years at Davidson. She sets for a very good program in North Texas – Dallas Skyline. They also routinely push out college level players year in and year out. We see all of the hard work that Xuan has put in over the years when we watch her great form and technique.

[player_tooltip player_id="87456" first="Sophia" last="Reynolds"] [2021] 5-10 Setter (HS: The Shelton School/Club: Madfrog/Verbal: Arkansas-Little Rock)

She is able to play amazing defense in right back. Coaches love when a setter is able to do both skill sets. To have a setter who not only is able to run your offense but help your team win by playing exceptional defense is a coach’s dream. She has great hands and is a solid setter. Her posture while setting is what stands out the most. She is very confident on the court and it shows with her body language. She always seems in control of her offense. She is able to set her very athletic hitters at Madfrog very well and they have an explosive offense with her at the helm.

This is just some quick analysis of a few of the top setters in Texas. There are plenty more for us to cover. Stay tuned for more coverage on the rest. If you know of any great players we are missing out on, please email me at nov8vb@yahoo.com.
