Section 36: Fairfield
A tougher-than-average section, Fairfield emerged as the victor more for their resiliency than having more talent that most of the other teams here. We’re huge fans of Madisyn Steele (’21, Team Pineapple 17 Black, 6-2, MB), who returns as the clear #1 option on offense (#2 in kills in 2019) and defense (#1 in blocks in 2019). Losing in the state semifinal last fall, Fairfield looks to equal their success again in ’20.
Section 35: Rochester
On the other end of the competitive scale is section 35, which was Rochester’s to lose. Although the Zebras graduate two of their top three attackers, leading returner Kaitlin Rogers (’21, 5-10, MB/OH) brings her all-District trophy along with her numbers (#2 in kills, #1 in aces, #2 in blocks) to try and make another regional run.
Section 34: Boone Grove
Moving towards the northwestern portion of the state, we have yet another section that isn’t normally too competitive. The Wolves are regular champs here, and seem to reload annually. Undersized MB/OH Hailey Cook (’21, 5-7, MB/OH) is one of a group of young athletes that return for the Wolves, with Miss Cook #2 in blocks and #2 in aces on the season last fall.
Section 33: Andrean
Section 33 is the least competitive of the four in this region. None of the matches went beyond a sweep, and none of the losing teams in each match made it to 20 points in any one set. That being said, the “Fighting 59ers” (That’s their mascot, look it up.) were within a couple of points for making it to the state 2A Final Four. This is a program that is regularly seeing state playoff success, recently winning the 2A state title in 2017. Setter Maddie Kmetz (’22, Epic United, 5-8, S) has been running the program at Andrean since her freshman season, and doesn’t look to give it up anytime soon.
