Section 40: Wapahani
This is a no-brainer. The Raiders rarely get competition until they reach the regional, and this sectional is theirs to lose year-in and year-out. What hurts the rest of the section is (1) Wapahani’s proximity to Munciana, and (2) the Raiders’ youth. Making it back to the state championship match is something the Raiders will be going for this fall, a very realistic goal. We like the trio of Mallory Summers (’21, 5-8, OH), Chloe Cook Chloe Cook 5'9" | OH Wapahani | 2023 State IN (’23, Munciana 15 Quora, 5-9, OH) and Camryn Wise (’23, Munciana 15 Gators, 5-10, MB).
Section 39: Tipton
Although this sectional is a little more competitive than Section 40, we still see a pretty regular diet of the Tipton Blue Devils in our regular review of 2A schools in the northern half of the state. Bursting onto the scene is Ashlee Schram (’23, Grant County VBC, 6-2, MB), a kid more known for her basketball play. Numbers do not lie, though, as Ashlee averaged a block per set in her first season on varsity. I see a road trip in my future…..
Section 38: Wabash
A well-balanced offense led the Apaches to not only the section 38 title but a regional semifinal win over Tipton. Wabash even took a set off of Wapahani, who made a state championship match appearance. Similar to Wapahani, Wabash has a three-headed monster of offense in Mariah Wyatt (’21, 5-11, MB), Alivia Short (’21, 5-9, OH) and Jordan Stumbo (’21, Grant County VBC, 5-8, OH). 2020 might be the last time we see this team do this well for a bit; the rest of the section is catching up quickly.
Section 37: Seeger
Five players graduate from the Patriots ’19 squad. What returns is sophomore middle Riley Shrader (’22, 5-9, MB) and a few other starters that could make another regional run in ’20. The question is this: do they have enough to win it again? Clinton Prairie might have something to say about that.
