Section 60: Hauser
In a little town named Hope lies one of the more consistently athletic programs in the state. Hauser has always had solid girls’ programs, and volleyball starts every successful school year. I have yet to see this program have less than 20 wins (27-8 in 2019), and although most of them are multisport athletes, they deserve a bunch of love from the likes of us. Take, for example, Hannah Johnson (’21, 5-10, MB). Three sport stud (VB, BB, SB), 21 kills and 5 blocks in the regional final, and was just two points away from making it to the state final. Or maybe Andi Clark (’22, 5-7, DS), 42 digs total in the regional semis and final. I look forward to seeing what the Jets have in store this season, and if they have what it takes to get over the hump.
Section 59: Indianapolis Lutheran
Coach Kathy Anderson is also an assistant for Circle City 16 Purple, and she’s one of the best trainers in the state. Her program has always had success, and there have been very rare times when Lutheran has faltered in the sectional. You can look at her record and say, “Wait, they went 10-22 in 2019. How is that good?” Well, look at their schedule. They play 3A and 4A schools every fall. Additionally, the IHSAA does the archaic “blind draw” for the postseason, making the regular season moot for records, but an excellent preparation for the playoffs. Returning for Saints in 2020 is six-rotation player Dara Milivojac (’21, 5-7, OH/DS). When you average over five kills per set, you get our attention.
Section 58: Indiana School For The Deaf
In the Indiana State Fairground’s back yard is the beautiful campus of the Deaf School. I’ve personally had the distinct pleasure of reffing for the Deaf Hoosiers, and they know the game well. Add to the tough schedule their annual National Deaf Volleyball Tournament, and their schedule includes the best from around all deaf schools in the country. In our purview, their top returning attacker is Caitlyn Smith (’21, 5-9, OH) and their setter Seanna Baird (’23, 5-5, S) has some upside.
Section 57: Bloomfield
Their run to the semi state included wins over Lutheran and Hauser, which just ONE of those wins is no easy task. Returning won’t be easy either, but since the Cardinals only graduate one, they have plenty in reserve for another run. Top returning attacker Kylee Shelton (’21, 5-10, OH) was second on the team in kills and blocks, and finished with the most digs on the season. Malea Ramsey (’21, S) and her nearly 10 assists per set look to help in that run.
