Players Bound To Breakout

Wisconsin is regularly supplying some of the top high school athletes in the nation. With players from all classes heading to big college programs, there are also athletes bound to have that breakout season. They may taking on a new role or made overall progress outside the high school season. Here are some players who could have a big breakout 2020.

Angela Refinski – 2023 – 5’5 – Outside Hitter – Milwaukee Reagan

Refinski will be entering her sophomore year as an energetic hitter, and she can play on either pin as well as in the back row. Milwaukee Reagan has a gem with the talented Refinski as a key player while competing in the Milwaukee City – Gold Conference.

[player_tooltip player_id="80795" first="Anna" last="Bohrer"] – 2021 – 6’1 – Setter/Right Side Hitter - Verona

Bohrer has the opportunity to make a colossal impact for the Wildcats who will be need to replace their main distributor as they graduated [player_tooltip player_id="80184" first="Jordan" last="Armstrong"] this spring. She has nice hands and a powerful swing with the ability to score points. Verona may not have some of the same key pieces as last year, but they should definitely be a force to reckon with.

Bella Braun – 2023 – 5’8 – Right Side Hitter - Nicolet

Keep an eye out for Braun as a rising star at Nicolet. Nicolet was pretty young last season but will graduate a few positions that could open up some opportunities for this sophomore. Braun will join the likes of outside hitters Ava Ellegard (2021 – 5’11) and Katie Heidenrich (2022 – 5’7), who are rising in the ranks themselves.

[player_tooltip player_id="81305" first="Delaney" last="McIntosh"] – 2022 – Outside Hitter - Verona

With the graduation of Maddy Kelley and [player_tooltip player_id="80197" first="Megan" last="Touchett"], Verona will have big shoes to fill with ball control, knowledge, and scoring points. McIntosh was a strong pin hitter for the Wildcats in 2019, and this year she should be viewed as a more dominant offensive threat. Verona will return [player_tooltip player_id="81322" first="Claudia" last="Bobb"] (2022 – 5’6) as their top point scorer from 2019.

Ella Luoma – 2022 – Libero - Franklin

Luoma will be back for her junior year on a squad that is losing a lot of its weapons to graduation. She is their consistent anchor in the back court and in serve-receive and also gives their offense numerous opportunities to run in-system plays. The Sabers have been a favorite in the Southeast Conference, but for Luoma, this will be a year where her experience is especially crucial to her team’s success.

[player_tooltip player_id="91899" first="Gwen" last="Crull"] – 2023 – 6’0 – Middle Blocker - McFarland

McFarland made it to the state championship in 2019 before running into a tough Luxemburg-Casco squad. Crull was huge for the Spartans as a freshman, and this year with more knowledge and confidence, she’s bound to make some waves. She will have 2 seasons to work with upcoming setter, [player_tooltip player_id="57284" first="Maddy" last="Fortune"] (2022 – 5’9), and Crull will be a quick and athletic middle to close the block. [player_tooltip player_id="81270" first="Avery" last="Pennekamp"] (2022 – 5’10) and Nina Crull (2021 – 5’11) will be back on the left pin as this team will have various weapons who can terminate in 2020.

[player_tooltip player_id="91877" first="Karissa" last="Fortune"] – 2023 – 5’11 – Outside Hitter – Appleton North

Fortune will be entering her sophomore year, but this won’t be her first rodeo. She is a complete all-around player and a competitor that saw a lot of floor time as a freshman. Fortune has energy, a major court presence, and she will be fun to watch as she grows throughout her high school career.

Katie Trias – 2021 – Libero - Verona

Trias will be entering her senior year, and after a solid offseason playing for Sting, she will be looking to step into a bigger role as the libero for Verona. With the graduation of [player_tooltip player_id="80208" first="Amelia" last="Hust"], Trias will look to move from the role of defensive specialist, where she showcased her tenacity on defense. Trias will be a critical piece to Verona’s success.

Kindly Kilar – 2023 – 5’10 – Setter/Outside Hitter - Whitewater

Kilar isn’t a new name to the Badger Region High Performance program, but she will be working with a number of seniors to find a way into the lineup. She could be a big playmaker and main point scorer hitting off a setter like [player_tooltip player_id="80785" first="Cora" last="Linos"] (2021 – 6’1). Kilar is the type of player who can find success in any role she’s given.

Megan Schultz – 2023 – 6’4 – Middle Blocker - New Berlin West

Schultz is 6’4 and packs a real punch. She can get from pin to pin to close the block and works hard in transition where she can terminate. Her athleticism and physicality will really be something to watch heading into her Sophomore season for NBW
