These teams are familiar to me and I wanted to see how Thomas Jefferson is developing this year with their new coaching staff and I had not seen West play since last fall so I made a point of checking them both out prior to their regional play starting this week. This match was a back and forth battle ending with the Sioux City West Wolverines beating the Jackets 3-2 with the final set ending 15-13. Either team could have won that night but it was the Wolverines serve/receive and actual serving that determined the winner.
Ellie Perrine (2021, MH, Thomas Jefferson)
Ellie is a versatile player in the front row for the Jackets. She plays right most of the time but has spent time in the past in the middle or on the outside as well. In other words, she is a threat all around the court and appears to have taken well to the new coaching style of Darion White, first-year coach for the Jackets. She had 6 kills, 2 blocks, and 4 aces against the Wolverines in this match.
Chloe Alley (2021, S, Thomas Jefferson)
Chloe has been a setter as long as I have known her. This year she officially gets to set for her high school team for the first season and her last as a Jacket. Prior to this season, she had been a DS for the team since her freshman year, making the varsity team as soon as she started high school. She is a talented player and with Ellie Perrine, is one of the captains for this newly formed team under Darion White’s leadership this year. Chloe had 25 assists, 2 kills, 1 block, and 2 aces against the Wolverines.
Abby Evers (2022, OH, Thomas Jefferson)
Abby has not played high school volleyball before this, her junior, year. She is wiry and athletic and really fast, a very good combination for hitting from the outside or playing in the middle. She is also fast enough that she is a six rotation player very effective in the back row digging things up on defense. While most of the year focusing on soccer, I know she missed the game and am very glad she had a chance to return to volleyball this year. Abby had 1 assist, 3 kills, 19 digs, and a service ace against the Wolverines.
Maggie Gunderson (2022, RS, Thomas Jefferson)
Maggie is a multi-sport athlete running cross country, playing soccer, and now returning to volleyball for her junior season after being absent since starting high school. Maggie plays on the right and is very good on defense also. With the rule changes for this team that came along with the new coaching staff installed at Jefferson this year, she has an opportunity to play volleyball. Maggie has a great platform and is a killer on offense. Maggie had 2 kills and 8 digs against the Wolverines.
Samara Alcaraz (2023, MH, Thomas Jefferson)
Samara has been impressive since she arrived for high school last year, all knees and elbows, determined like no other, and tall. Now that she has grown into all that height she is more impressive than ever. She has improved her hitting power and accuracy as well and is now a threat getting massive amounts of game time for her efforts. Samara had a team-high 10 kills on the night against the Wolverines. She is becoming more versatile as well and had the most kills against the Wolverines last week.
Jazlynn Sanders (2022, RS, Thomas Jefferson)
Jazlynn is showing more confidence and aggression on the court. She had 6 kills, 7 digs, 3 aces, and 93.3% serving efficiency against Sioux City West. She definitely was involved in some key plays in the Jacket’s loss to West.
Eneyada Vasquez (2022, S, Sioux City West)
Eneyada had 37 assists, 5 digs, and 1 ace in the Wolverine’s win over the Jackets. She was instrumental in setting up the plays and leading her team to victory.
Maya Augustine (2023, OH, Sioux City West)
Maya had 10 kills, 2 blocks, 4 digs, and 3 aces against the Jackets. She was indispensable to her team during this tug of war. Players like Maya are the foundation of their teams. They do a little bit of everything on the court to get the “W”.
Kylah Cortez (2022, DS, Sioux City West)
Kylah is a 5’2″ DS for the Wolverines who came up big in this match against the Jackets. She had 1 assist, 13 kills, 3 aces, and a team-high 10 digs. She is a clutch player for the Wolverines and I can’t wait for her senior season to see how she finishes out her high school career. Nicely done!
Holly Duax (2022, MH, Sioux City West)
Holly had 6 kills, 3 total blocks, 1 ace, and 3 digs for the Wolverines.
Payton Monroe (2021, RS, Sioux City West)
Payton had 1 assist, 6 kills, and 1 dig for the Wolverines. The gist of what I am learning is that this was completely a joint effort by the Wolverines.
Haley Gruis (2022, L, Sioux City West)
Haley had a team-high 19 digs for the Wolverines in their victory over the Jackets.
Council Bluffs Jefferson plays Dowling in their first regional game on 10/22/2020 at 7pm, while Sioux City West lost to Sioux City North on 10/20/2020 in their first round of Regional play for Class 5A.
