A regular season, Hawk-10 conference match, that both teams really wanted to win, but the Saintes really needed to win, this matchup was eye-opening to the possibilities opening up to both teams. At this point in the season, Red Oak had not lost a conference match before tonight and beat the Saintes at an earlier tournament in two sets. They have been viewed as one of the most underrated teams in this conference. St. Albert has been ranked in the middle of their conference so far this season, hanging on to local area rankings by their fingernails. This match shows what the Saintes are capable of and it is a lot. Let’s start out by talking about the setters for these teams to unravel how the Saintes accomplished this win.
THE SETTERS
Chloe DeVries (2021, S, Red Oak)
Chloe threw up 34 assists at Thursday night’s match at St. Albert. Chloe was an integral part of Red Oak’s fight for the win. There was one other assist for Red Oak and that was put up by Abbey Jones Abbey Jones DS/L Red Oak | 2021 State IA , the libero.
Maddie Horvath (2022, S, St.Albert)
Maddie had the most assists with 19 for the Saintes. She also scored 1 kill with a .333 hitting efficiency, 4 digs, and had 14 successful serves out of 14 attempted.
Ella Klusman (2024, S, St.Albert)
Ella, the other setter at St.Albert and a freshman phenom, threw up 14 assists for the Saintes in their win over Red Oak. There were two other assists for the Saintes, one put up by Lauren Williams, the other by Landry Miller.
After seeing the same numbers almost for assists it made me conclude that the rest of the story is either defensive play or hitting efficiency in this conference match-up win for the Saintes. Let’s explore the hitters!
