Division 3 teams will take the floor Saturday to battle for a Regional title. The Sectional 1 field features experienced state tournament programs like Grantsburg, Clear Lake, and Fall Creek. The year 2020 has thrown lots of twists to the season, and the postseason is no different. In this particular sectional, we saw Ladysmith with a win over Thorp before advancing to the Regional Championship by a Regis forfeit. Edgar took a similar path by taking a win over Hurley and then advancing by a Phillips forfeit.

I’ve got six names that you should keep an eye on from the field of Division 3 teams. There’s a lot of play left, and I think these athletes will be critical to the potential success of their individual teams.

Sectional 1

[player_tooltip player_id="81274" first="Gianna" last="Vollrath"] – 2022 – 6’1 – Middle Blocker – Fall Creek

One of Fall Creek’s most lethal hitting options has been a dominant presence at the net since her freshman year. Vollrath has a quick arm, athleticism, and is a gem in western Wisconsin. I believe she is just hitting her stride as she elevates so easily and can hit the sharp angles.

Hanne Johnson – 2022 – 5’11 – Setter/Pin Hitter - Grantsburg

It’s an unfortunately familiar tendency to see players from northern and western Wisconsin get forgotten or overlooked. Johnson from Grantsburg should not be overlooked. She’s an incredibly athletic do-it-all player who simply makes everyone around her better. In a shortened season, Johnson has still managed to average over 5 kills per set while holding a .457 hitting percentage.

Liz Rosen – 2022 – 5’8 – Outside Hitter – Clear Lake

Rosen showed a wide range of skills that could make her a daunting six-rotation hitter. She was able to develop under the other Rosen hitters, and now it’s her time. Rosen is definitely another reason the northwestern players need some more exposure.

Maddie Rosen – 2021 – Middle Blocker – Clear Lake

Rosen is the kind of middle that alleviates many of the blocking burdens felt by the smaller front-line players. She does a good job of stepping up to preventing the ball from crossing into her court space whenever needed. Rosen’s presence is described as relentless and dominating.

[player_tooltip player_id="91870" first="Reagan" last="Borchardt"] – 2023 – 5’10 – Middle Blocker – Edgar

While we’re on the topic of talented middles, Borchardt is another force in the front who will catch your attention on Friday night. She plays high above the net, works the angles, and moves really well laterally while running smart routes. The Wildcats are a strong serving crew that takes teams out of system and gives Borchardt quite a few opportunities to take control of an overpass.

[player_tooltip player_id="90602" first="Vanessa" last="Krueger"] – 2022 – 5’7 – Outside Hitter - Marathon

Krueger’s junior year will be valuable as she steps into a big leadership position for a young Marathon lineup. She is a talented 6-rotation outside that finds a way to play and work on her game. whether its indoor or outdoor. Krueger plays with tenacious defense and a smart game plan.

Keep An Eye On:

Abby Meltz – 2021 – Libero – Ladysmith

Ally Clark – 2023 – Middle Blocker – Ladysmith
