PrepDig VISAA Division III October Award Winners

October was a stellar month for several players in the Virginia Independent Sports Athletic Association (VISAA). The award winners are generally selected from the previous award winners unless there is<img class="size-medium wp-image-110805 alignright" style="font-size: 1rem;" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/pd/uploads/2020/09/visaa-logo-300x197.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="197" /> consistent performances by an individual over the entire month. Below is a listing of the award winners for the previous weeks in October. Defenders of the Week: Emily Nordwall (Broadwater Academy); [player_tooltip player_id="111425" first="Abby" last="Hinton"] (Stonebridge); Hope Parrish (Denbigh Baptist); [player_tooltip player_id="111467" first="Megan" last="James"] (Guardian Christian Academy) Setter of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id="111404" first="Phoebe" last="Prillaman"] (New Covenant); Emily Hinton and Molly Williams (Stonebridge); Makayla Daniels (TEACH); Berkeley Stenger (Denbigh Baptist) Attacker of the Week: Hope Parrish (Denbigh Baptist); Amelia Matson (Stonebridge); Leanna Caldwell (TEACH); [player_tooltip player_id="111436" first="Grace" last="Bickley"] (Portsmouth Christian) Player of the Week: Hope Parrish (Denbigh Baptist); [player_tooltip player_id="111467" first="Megan" last="James"] (Guardian Christian); [player_tooltip player_id="111506" first="Drew" last="Williams"] (Stonebridge); Berkeley Stenger (Denbigh Baptist). The Monthly Award Winners will get certificates for their recognition as the PregDig Virginia Monthly Award Winner. The selections will be Team of the Month, Defender of the Month, Setter of the Month, Attacker of the Month and Player of the Month. StoneBridge (Chesapeake, Virginia) is our Team of the Month. This will be no surprise to anyone as they have won 3 of the last 4 State Championships and have had yet another dominant season with a 9-0 month and 27-2 record overall. Led by Coach Steve Elliott, the team has solid senior leadership with returning All State selections Libero [player_tooltip player_id="111425" first="Abby" last="Hinton"] and Outside Hitter [player_tooltip player_id="111506" first="Drew" last="Williams"]. Abby had 65 digs and a .914 receive percentage for the month. Drew continued her dominant ways in 28 sets with 88 kills, 26 aces, and 61 digs. Newcomer Amelia Matson has been a significant impact player leading the team in kills (126) and aces (32) for the top VISAA Division III team in Virginia. Sadly, with the cancellation of the state championships due to Co-Vid, they will not be able to defender their state championship in the Fall of 2020 season Defender of the Month: Hope Parrish, the 5’8 sophomore Outside Hitter from Denbigh Baptist<img class=" wp-image-115079 alignright" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/pd/uploads/2020/11/berkeley-and-hope-denbigh-baptist-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="223" height="297" /> had an outstanding October in her second season for the Minutemen. She was outstanding in all aspects and received serious consideration for Player of the Month and Attacker of the Month as well. Hope led Division III in digs with 182 for an up and coming Denbigh Baptist program. She added in 168 kills and 23 aces during October as well. Other candidates: Emily Nordwall (Broadwater Academy: 59 digs, 8 blocks); [player_tooltip player_id="111425" first="Abby" last="Hinton"] (65 digs) and [player_tooltip player_id="111467" first="Megan" last="James"] (127 digs). Setter of the Month: Berkeley Stenger from Denbigh Baptist is our Setter of the Month award winner. The 5’5 setter was Setter of the Week twice in October. She had a well rounded month for the Minutemen. The other part of the dynamic duo from Denbigh Baptist amassed 56 kills, 30 aces, 25 blocks, 82 digs and the Division III leader in assists with 217 on the month. Despite her smallish stature, she is a dominant force for the team and plays much bigger than her size. She is also 5th in the state in hitting percentage at .369. Attacker of the Month: [player_tooltip player_id="111436" first="Grace" last="Bickley"], the dynamic Outside Hitter from Portsmouth Christian, had another stellar month in October. As the primary offensive option for her team, the 5’8 Outside Hitter terminated 78 kills in October. She added in 36 aces, and 37 digs. Grace had an exceptional .958 receive percentage and hitting a whopping .465 and leading VISAA Division III in that category. She’s top 10 in kills, kill percentage, hitting percentage, aces and 17th in digs. Coming off a First Team All State Selection, she is closing out her scholastic career approaching 500 career kills, a career hitting percentage around .350 and over 160 digs and aces. Player of the Month: [player_tooltip player_id="111467" first="Megan" last="James"]. The 5’7 junior from Guardian Christian Academy is one of the top players in the state. The explosive Outside Hitter is a potential NCAA Division I talent with a powerful arm swing, devastating jump serve and exceptional defense. Megan leads the state in kills and kills per set, second in digs and in aces. She was named First Team All State in 2019 as a sophomore and continues her dominance in her junior year. She won Defender of the Week as well during this month. Others considered for the Player of the Month: Stonebridge’s Amelia Matson and [player_tooltip player_id="111506" first="Drew" last="Williams"], Hope Parrish and Berkeley from Denbigh Baptist and Leanna Caldwell from TEACH.
